Annual road trip to the Outer Hebrides (April 2025)
Had our annual trip up to the Outer Hebrides in April, 2,100-mile jaunt - which literally works out for us as 700 miles there, 700 miles around the islands for two weeks (which always amazes us how much mileage we do in such a small space), and 700 miles home.
This year the weather was SIMPLY THE BEST. Last year had been a disaster with the weather (and illness), so this year we got our reprieve!
We left home at 4am, and arrived at our night-stop hotel in Glencoe by 4pm, after a stop for breakfast & lunch.
Parked on a slipway on North Uist for some crab fishing:
And a chance to fly my drone somewhere other than the garden for a change..
We had literally one day which was grey in the whole two weeks... and we used that to head over to the 'abandoned' house on the tidal island of Vallay, which means driving across the tidal sounds at low tide. We hadn't done it since 2019, so was fun. Most people walk (and we passed a Discovery & a Defender in the car park). But it's more fun to drive, so long as you give the car a very good clear afterwards (we also drive through a freshwater loch to clean the underside thoroughly).
Always fun when the sat nav says you're at sea:
Clear view ahead, passed a few people walking it:
One of the few times I ever go off-road:
Parked on the beach before the island (there's lots of nails loose in the grass, from the rotting mansion house on the island, so having seen them previously, I don't like to drive onto the island and risk a puncture out there):
You have to on the way back. You just have to:
Freshly washed bottom!
Parked next to this Disco on the Isle of Berneray... anyone on the forum?
What a road (causeway)...
Clachan Sands beach on North Uist could literally have been the Whitsundays it was so stunning. Only the temperature told you it was still Scotland:
Similarly amazing was a day trip over to the Isle of Harris:
Risked my little DJI Mini 4K heading quite far out to sea... thankfully it came home too. Had this whole beach to ourselves for the two hours we were there:
My son's 11, but we found a track off the public roads, for a driving lesson (his holiday highlight):
One of our fave beaches, on the Isle of Eriskay:
Back on Skye, and we chose the Glenelg turntable ferry as an alternative option to the Skye bridge. Made for a nice change! Only £20 and no queue.
Hilton Glasgow is always really good for our night-stop coming home. We don't fit in the car park, but call ahead, and they let you park outside. Result!
Back home. Best £50 spent, after all those miles... Local hand car wash.
Can't recommend the Outer Hebrides enough, especially when you go before the season really starts. We literally had such a peaceful time, almost every beach to ourselves. Just bliss.
I'm sure the usual moaner will be along shortly to say people shouldn't go on holiday to his Scotland, and how we ruin it all, but I really can't be bothered getting into that argument again.
Anyway, always like to share pics of a truly PHENOMENAL car after a great journey. She didn't miss a beat, and got us there safely & back, for which I'm always grateful.
And as people do come here when they're considering a Disco as a future car, it's nice to show ownership can be very positive.
We love this car to bits. It's an incredible mileage machine.

If you can’t be bothered then why mention it at all let alone in such distorted and provocative terms.
Dismissing legitimate concerns held by the majority of local residents about responsible tourism and the lack of infrastructure in the Highlands and Islands.
