    How's your steering?

    Mrs PDES and I were chatting about the new car which has now done 1000 miles and without prompting, she commented that she wasn't particularly happy with the handling. She said that she felt the steering was a little light/vague and that she seemed to be constantly correcting. I had not mentioned to her that I had also thought this but wanted to give the car a fair "crack" before being too critical. It's all too easy to compare with the D4 but I am trying to make allowances for the fact that this is a totally different vehicle.

    Anyway, just throwing it "out there" to see if others have a view on this.

    The steering does feel light but I don't find myself correcting it though.

    I agree, steering does feel a bit lighter and more responsive/accurate than the D4, but no issues with correcting the steering wheel.

    Were you possibly towing when this was an issue, or just the car itself ???

    Also all cars in the UK will veer off to the left initially, as biased that way, so as not too hit oncoming traffic, incase the driver becomes unwell behind the wheel. So possible your tracking, wheel alignment geometry is off, but surely not for a brand new car ??

    I am currently running 20 inch rims, with 255mm wide tyres.

    Maybe having 22 inch rims with 285mm wide tyres may make a difference, so i will report back next week. I would think having a wider profile tyre would make the steering a bit less prone too correcting it as it has a wider treadpath ??

    Possible that having an extra 30 mm (1.2 inches on each corner may make a difference) ??

    I'm going to upgrade my alloys to 21" the 19" look like dinner plates on a car the D5s size and not anymore comfortable.

    Yes look like wheels/castors on a shopping trolley Laughing

    Even 20 s look small for such a huge body

    21 minimum or 22s Thumbs Up

    Will put up photos tonight of a D5 with 23s Laughing

    ps odd size rims like 17,19,21 etc are more expensive than 18,20,22s, when coming too replace the tyres, as they are an odd size apparently.

    Mind you i may get a set of 18s for mud plugging (like Grabber ATS with a chunky tread pattern ) as wont be as easily damaged like the 22s.

    My only concern is if they will clear the calipers ??? Rolling Eyes

    It felt the same when towing but this is predominately solo.

    I am running 21 inchers.

    What width are you 275 mm ??

    Maybe take it up with the garage, as they may have overlooked something or a steering rack issue ??

    I have had no issues, neither has my Mrs. In fact said it was a better all rounder than the D4, apart from the ship like wallowy ride when pushed hard in the corners she said.

    Thats quite a wide tyre as it stands.

    Sorry too state the obvious but have you rechecked the initial tyre pressures ???

    Hmmmm only other thing i can think of is that the tyres have not bedded in yet from new, but after 1000 miles should have done by now, but that usually affects the braking distance, not affecting the steering ?? Rolling Eyes

    There is something on topix about steering wheel misalignement/drift. Worth checking with the dealer.

    Issue: Vehicle user reports steering wheel is mis-aligned whilst driving or the steering pulls/drifts during PDI road test.

    Cause: Currently under investigation by Land Rover engineering teams.

    Action: If you have a new Discovery (L462) that displays this condition AND you are within 100 mile radius of Birmingham then please do not conduct any re-work. Instead raise an ePQR detailing the issue including any findings you have made. Within 24 hours we will be in contact arranging either a visit from our engineering team or detailing any required re-work via the ePQR / Telephone.
     If you have not had any feedback within 24 HRS of sending the EPQR , please carry on with necessary repairs
