    Leaking windscreen

Hi everyone it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I have a 21 reg Discovery and the windscreen leaking, its my 2 Discovery and believe or not its the 3 time it’s happened.

My car has an extended warranty which doesn’t cover the windscreen and Land Rover aren’t interested in fixing it.

My first Discovery was a new 17 Reg which leaked after 12 months, it was repaired then just after 3 years old when the warranty ran out it started leaking again. I kept the car for 4 years then sold it, then I bought a used 21 Reg when it was about just over 30 months old.

Family and friends thought I was crazy buying an other Land Rover but then there not broken there fabulous cars. This will definitely be my last Land Rover. Sad

Is there a group action lawsuit going on, because this issue seems to be happening a lot. If anyone is aware of a group action please let me know.

I looked into this a while back and found no group was actively pursuing a lawsuit. Although a common fault across several JLR models the nearest I got was someone suggesting it.

A lot of people have had it fixed foc as a goodwill gesture (myself included) and that seems to have sufficed.

Coincidentally mine started to leak again last year (after 3 years leak free). I am convinced that mine is on the body side of the rubber, not the glass side. So last weekend I sequentially pulled back the rubber across the top of the windscreen and ran some ‘free flowing’ clear liquid silicon sealant (formulated for this sort of application) in behind. It’s supposed to be self levelling and fills gaps.

It peed done a couple of nights ago and there was no leak. Now I may have tempted fate by mentioning it but if it gives me another year till I sell it, it will be worth it. And with plenty left in the tube I am up for a repeat application if needs be.

I know we shouldn’t have to be doing this sort of thing but if it removes one angst in my life it’s worth it.

I've got a tube of that stuff in my toolbox as my son's BMW X3 developed a windscreen leak earlier this year. It certainly cured the leak and we've had no recurrence since applying it Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply and the info about the sealant, I’m still in contact with Land Rover hopefully they might reconsider and fix it. Being still quite an expensive car I think a permanent fix is needed and I would like to keep a bit longer. If it leaks a second time which it will probably do I’ll use the quick fix and get shut asap.👍

Here in the US, and particularly in the Mountain West, they drop sand in the winter for traction when it's too cold for de-icer, and after large storms when plows leave a skim of ice and packed snow on the road. There are always pencil-eraser sized chunks of gravel in there, and on dry roads at motorway speeds they're little bits of flak that get kicked up ahead of you. Windscreens are consumable items here and covered by insurance after deductible. I've had mine (2017) replaced twice for cracks that spread, plus the original windscreen replaced under warranty after leaking about 4 months in. No windscreen done by a proper professional has ever leaked for me, on any vehicle. My original warranty replacement was handled by Safelite, a company whose only job is auto glass, as have all other windscreen replacements I've had done.

The original problem with the windscreen was that there was a gap in either the sealant that holds the seal and windscreen to the vehicle creating a space for moisture to migrate between the seal and the window or vehicle, or a gap in the seal itself. In my case, there was actually a half-inch gap in the seal itself - like they cut it too short and it couldn't wrap all the way around the circumference of the windscreen. Had the gap been at the bottom it probably never would have leaked. But it was at the top of the windscreen, in the center.

Were your windscreens replaced by the same tech? Were the techs Land Rover techs? If so, this is a workmanship issue and they should make it right. If not - probably still a workmanship issue, but you're unlikely to prove it.

Thanks for your reply stone chips and cracks can happen but poor workmanship is terrible, I’m phoning my local dealer tomorrow to find out what Land Rover have decided.

If they decline fixing it I will personally contact Land Rover, if I had the funds I would go to a solicitor having 2 Discovery’s and 3 leaks is not exceptable.

I believe in the US there’s a group action but not in the UK, I’m sure there will be one soon.
