It’s sales figures that’s the hot topic at the moment.

Personally I think the new Defender will be the natural replacement for many D3 and D4 owners not wanting to go up market to the D5. In fact it was hinted by Gerry McGovern that once new Defender is out there may be room for a lower spec D5.

    Quote:
Defender will be polarizing in design terms from Range Rover and from Discovery. At that point we’ll probably be able to pull the Discovery a little bit back that way [toward Defender]. So there is a logic there.

This is a great interview :

Any Discovery owner not wanting to go upmarket would be better placed in an Original Discovery, ever since they broke out 1989 they have year on year gotten progressively better.

All this mumbo jumbo was being spouted about in 2004 when the D3 emerged, back then everyone was moaning that the rear door had been replaced with an up and over split tailgate, that it wouldn’t survive off road with unreliable air suspension, it was ugly, too many electronics.

There wasn’t that much to moan about when the D4 morphed on to the scene in 2009.

Back then when the D3 first emerged i was an Avid Defender driver, 200 Tdi, 300 Tdi, V8, Puma engine, spanning almost 20 Years in 90’s and 110’s all CSW’s. Whilst my Defender 90 2.5 Puma was in for the umpteenth time for an ECU upgrade I was loaned a D3.
At that point I realised I was no longer a genuine bonafide LR enthusiast Mr. Green

I didn’t pick the Defender up and stayed at the dealers, All this is irrelevant I know, but the step up from a Defender 90 XS into a D3 was a jump forward in comfort and luxury.

A lot like the difference between a D3 and the D5.

As for Defender. When it does eventually break cover it will be the lowliest priced in the complete range of products. Anything that is going to compete with Discovery 5 from a Defender point of view will also be priced roughly the same for the high end models. The SVO products will be as usual, overpriced.

Land Rover stopped making CSW’s in Defender Form in the early 90’s to increase Discovery sales, to go back almost 30 years and make the same mistakes, even JLR aren’t that incompetent.
