As I have the 4 zone AC and was wondering as well what the difference would be between the 2 auto buttons on the front, I did check the imanual and... there is no difference at all, how stupid, why didn’t JLR didn’t give us the physical sync button as well? And as I was reading I did check the functions of the buttons of the second row as well and seems like I miss the physical sync button, whereas the manual states for my car I should have it... so I add the picture how it should be and question to other HSE lux owners with 4 climate zone, do you have the button on row 2 (number 7 on the picture)?
If the driver or passenger manually change the airflow on their side, pressing the auto button on their side will return fan and airflow settings back to automatic control on their side only, leaving the other front seat occupant's fan or airflow setting unaffected.
I have 4 zone air con and have three Auto buttons in the front and no Sync button in the rear.
I have a sync button on the screen in the front though.

Interesting as I only have 2 upfront, now wonder whether I have the 4 zone or not.
Russell, what other controls do you have? I have the ones in the second row, but are there others?
@RotherhamPete: Just played a bit with the settings on the screen on indeed there is a difference between the 2 front auto buttons. If you change the direction of the airflow (let’s say towards feet for the driver and face for the passenger) and then press the auto button for the driver the passenger’s settings will remain on face, while the driver’s settings might change (and vica versa), but I don’t think you can actually change the fan speed separately for driver and passenger, only front and back fan speed is adjustable. Is this correct? And regarding the sync button mentioned in the iGUIDE for the second row, this is not a reality than, just some ‘error’ in the iguide or forgotten to be placed in the car...
This is how mine looks like in the front, see picture. I do have the nanoe thing (number 4 on pic) as well, and just discovered in the iguide it should only work when airflow is to the face, not if the settings are on auto... nowhere else this was mentioned before buying this feature. Although when you manual select it, even when you are on the auto settings, it stays, but no idea if it actually works...
