air con re-gas on second service

    afternoon

so car went in for its second service and Mrs BBB was told it needed its air con gas replaced as it was 2 years old.
she couldn't get me so agreed to the work.
my question is is this a part of the service schedule at 2 years?

    cheers.

According to JLR's 32000ml or 24mth service schedule, there is no mention of Air con let alone air con regas.
Unfortunately it is accepted that cars lose up to 10% of its gas each year and top up is recommended at 2 years. The dilemma is that in order to accurately calculate how much is required to top up, all the existing gas has to be removed and weighed or discarded and new gas introduced so effectively a regas not a top up.

    Hmmmm thanks HTS.

My issue now is that I have the service pack for 5 years so one would have assumed this was covered in that.
They didn't pass this off as a suggestion but more of a this needs done.

Also at the back of your brain is the nagging concern that if the AC did go phut within the warranty they might wriggle out of it if I hadn't got this done.

I sense a call to them tomorrow!

    Cheers.

Seems totally mad to me and frankly seems like someone’s chancing their arm. I’ve had plenty cars, some new and some a year or two old and have never heard of this because if this is something that requires doing at just 2 years old LR should explain why and why it isn’t part of their service schedule at this point in thecars life. I’d be interested to know what they charged on top of the service plan? Confused

£250!!!!!!! That's a total rip off, I wouldn't expect to pay more than £100.I would demand a breakdown of parts and labour and then ring round local garages to find average price and offer that. Last year Kwik Fit were regassing for less than £50.
There should be a plate on the car stating how much refrigerant your car takes ( its more if you have upgraded climate)

That is crazy money. It's fairly transparent that the price they get for servicing your car when LR are effectively contributing to the price paid by you isn't enough and so they have caned you. I'm sorry to say I'd feel I'd been ripped off and it's particularly sinister that they put your wife on the spot like that. I thought that was the territory of rogue builders and bent mechanics trying to baffle people(particularly women) with Censored

Usual rip off item like coolant flush, completely not needed and looking for the “oh, go on then” from the unsuspecting owner or SignifOther of owner. Like charging half an hours labour to change wiper blades. At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask, these thing bar stewards don’t. Evil or Very Mad

It does take 1/2 Del to change blades

Don't forget it takes time to find the parts as they generally not picked at source (then the queue at the coffee machine)Rolling with laughter

I called them yesterday to get them to email me the service schedule and what exactly is required at each interval - needless to say they haven't emailed anything over yet.
Mrs BBB says it was actually handwritten on our worksheet before she even got there so it appears its standard practise from them.
The breakdown was 0.75hrs labour for 90.
And 95 I think for the gas then add vat so 230ish.

I have yet to check the exact wording in the handbook to see if its a desired or required task.

I would also say the brake fluid isn't covered then in the mtce pack so I wonder why they never did that? Might be a different sting the next time Rolling with laughter

Long winded, but read this!!!! (abridged version)

Land Rover has chosen R1234yf as the refrigerant for the new Range Rover Sport (L495) from 2014MY, Range Rover (L405) from 2014MY, Rover Evoque from 2013MY and the Discovery Sport from 2015MY. All future vehicles released by Land Rover starting with the new family of Discovery vehicles (due late 2016) and those built by the Special Vehicle Operations division will also be R1234yf compliant.

Whilst having a very significant but positive impact on greenhouse gas emissions, R1234yf is a more complex and costly refrigerant to produce and is currently approximately 20 times more expensive to purchase than R134a. It also requires specialist equipment with added built in safety measures than those previously needed to carry our any recovery and recharge operation. Additionally, now by Law, every person that is involved in ordering the gas, handling it and carrying out any work on a vehicle air conditioning system must undergo a full City and Guilds training course to obtain specific qualifications and be certificated before any involvement with the new refrigerant, or vehicle air conditioning systems and components can commence.

Carrying out an air conditioning service on a system where R1234yf is involved takes approximately one hour to go through the full cycle. During this process the new machine will recover and regenerate as much of the vehicles existing refrigerant as possible and only top up with the minimum amount of new gas as needed on a fully measured basis up to the limit of the system as set by Land Rover. The process will also include the injection of dye to detect any leaks and the addition of PAG oil in order to maintain lubrication of the compressor and system seals.

Whereas with R134a systems a full air conditioning system service was undertaken at a standard cost of £75.00 plus VAT which included labour, dye, oil, refrigerant and cabin deodoriser, the new R1234yf costing regime will be different.

In view of the high cost involved in purchasing the new refrigerant it is vital that vehicle air conditioning systems are regularly operated throughout the year (even in winter) and automatic climate control systems are operated continuously whilst the vehicle is in use. This will ensure the system remains well lubricated and does not allow the seals to dry and leak refrigerant into the atmosphere. It is recommended that a full air conditioning service is carried out every two years (but certainly no longer than three years) to make sure that all components are operating correctly and the volume of gas is maintained at maximum capacity. If any fault is suspected vehicle owners should seek expert opinion as a matter of urgency to avoid any large loss of refrigerant, which clearly will be very expensive to replace.

*** Apparently the machine approved by JLR has he ability to print out the total amount of refrigerant dispensed****
Current rice of R1234yf is £462/5Kg inc VAT from BOC

Well you have gasted my flabber there.
So they might actually have done the right thing and not been too harsh on price.
Dam. Was getting ready for a rumble.

Many thanks for the great detail though. Fully appreciated.
