2018 Si6 or SD?
Dont know which way to go guys. Had every disco since production began and now need to get back into a 5 after a Ford Ranger 3 year time out. Do I go for angel petrol or diesel.... someone PLEASE help me to make the choice!

Not driven the SD6 so I can't comment.
Reading the reports on here though, it's better than the Td6 due to the extra bhp from the few who have driven both.
However have briefly owned the 3l td6 and now 3l si6.
With regards to towing, I have no issues, even though torque is a bit less than the diesel.
Don't have a caravan, so not towing 1800 kg plus, where the diesel would be better.
Only tow 1000 kg max with big trailer on short journeys in and around town, with no issues.
Small trailer holds 330kg and use that alot more on the dualler and motorway, and no issues even when maxxed out.
Cant even tell trailer on the back with 7 people on board and still did 357 miles on a full tank. Initially full tank was about 305 mile mark.
Petrol is quicker than the older diesel I found, especially pulling out of roundabouts, but there was an 82 bhp difference.
As a daily driver, the Mrs prefers it to the diesel as alot more smoother power delivery, and it's quicker.
No need to be flooring it way back for a safe overtake, letting the turbos spool up. That was my main gripe with the Td6, as I felt it needed 300 bhp.
Compared to the Supercharger which has far better power delivery and in my opinion gives far more confidence when overtaking. A blip of the accelerator and engines is pulling like an elephant on steroids.
Rather than listen to the armchair pundits who have most probably not even seen an si6, let alone driven one and are quoting handbook facts and figures, go and test drive both. Go with what your heart says not your head.
Everyone has different needs at the end of the day.
You won't be disappointed I can assure you.

I tow a 1700kg caravan with an Si6. No problems...apart from fuel consumption (18mpg). Solo it’s a delight, seriously a delight
.....apart from the fuel consumption again! But now being retired, my mileage is way down apart from euro caravan holidays. So what they heck?
Not specifically Si6 related, it’s my general feeling that the steering is a little more ‘twitchy’ than my previous D4. I am told it’s the ‘electronic steering’ difference.
I’ve got 22” wheels and not sure whether they contribute in some way ....maybe it’s the combination of wider/bigger tyres, road ruts, lighter body weight and the different steering method that make the tow feel a little more skitty. Not an issue...perhaps its a benefit, as it makes me remember I still have a caravan behind on occasions. -

I do tow... sadly it's not a small load! Ifor Williams LM166 tri axle usually lugging the max 3500kg weight behind the rear windscreen. Is it easy to fit roof rails? Think these discos look a lot better with them on but they are chuffing expensive!!
I think it's all about what the dealer is like. Some wont even give you a full tank of fuel on a brand new car.
I took screenshots from Dan Duckworths and Rimmer Bros and presented them to the dealer. Duckworths was cheaper for most of the accessories.
On the FE, the dealer price matched the side steps, roof rails, tow bar/electrics, mudflaps and door protectors.
Saved a pretty penny but was charged for the fitting if I remember. £250 comes to mind.
Got a full tank of fuel, as well as premium carpet mats, and rubber mats. Spare number plate for trailer also.
On the Si6 got a better deal. All the accessories were price matched as above and fitted for free.
Apart from the side steps which I fitted my self and door protectors. The steps were 1/3 of the price compared to the LR ones and alot chunkier looking.
Full tank of fuel, luxury carpets, normal premium carpets, trailer number plate and a few bits n bobs like lr keyrings. Also gave me the original tow eye cover and the rear bumper strengthening bar, incase I ever need to take off the tow bar when we sell it.
I did not want to tempt fate fixing the roof bars, ie cracking the glass roof, or scratching the paint work with a screwdriver. I spoke to Duckworths and they advised me it was a tricky job. However a few on the forum have fitted them and have said was not too difficult.
As was getting fitted for free, I had no objection to the garage doing it. They have all the specialist tools and stepladders, and what would take them 30 mins probably take me 4 hours.
Plus if the roof leaked, be it on their head
As Wolfpack and Labbix have said, the fuel consumption will take a bit of a beating, when towing, but am getting 18mpg minus the trailer just town driving
Not sure if you have seen the Aussie video where the D5 pulls a 110 tonne road train with ease.
In retrospective towing a measly 3.5 tons is paltry in comparison which the engine is more than capable of doing, be it the 3l diesel or 3l petrol.
I have driven and towed with 2l petrol and 2l diesel and found both underpowered when driving normally. Constantly having to work the engines hard, especially when towing a heavy load uphill.
End of the day the 3l in either deriviant is a capable tow car, but the main reason we changed was due to oil dilution issues and the diesel scandal, tax fiasco.
