    Charging the battery

    Hi All,

What is the best way to charge the battery?
I will not be using the Disco for a few weeks so want to make sure the battery is kept on charge.

    Thank you.

i use a trickle charger/conditioner similar to what dealers use in showrooms to keep cars alive. i plug it in through the tow socket, works really well.

Please can you share the product you use, charging via the tow electrics seems a good way as you don't have to leave the bonnet open.

    @ stintov: https://www.mobilecentre.co.uk/ctek-comfor...ing-socket

@Bruce: I use both the CTEK 3 and 5 on my cars that stand still for loooong times and never had problems, you can leave them connected or just to one fill every 2 or 3 weeks. I didn’t notice any difference between the two methods.
For the D5 I use: CTEK 5 mxs:

As it has the AGM function for start-stop batteries

    thank you.

How did you connect it? Directly to the battery or to the power points in the engine bay?

I always use, and on all cars, the points under the bonnet.

But of course on some cars which have battery under the bonnet I use the red battery connector and a separate available point/connector if available, or any other unpainted metal surface on your car that isn’t near the battery. Use for instance one of the metal struts that holds the hood open, but never use the black connector on the battery itself.

    Some background info:
Batteries are more likely to explode when disconnecting a big battery charger without shutting it off first…But any spark around a battery has the potential of igniting the hydrogen gas that is given off by any lead-acid battery when it is being charged…The more vigorous the charge, the greater the chance of an explosion…

By not connecting directly to the battery (the black connector), there is little chance of a battery explosion…

This is on the CTEK bag, but I would NOT use the black connector, but a separate one or as said before any other unpainted metal piece away from the battery!

Last remark, with an AGM battery (typical start stop battery) I never use the reconditioning mode of the charger. I was told it would do more harm than good Wink

Here the info page from CTEK for normal operation:

Should the charger be set to AGM?

If you want to charge through the tow socket you can buy the adapter on the Disco4 forum. I made my own from a 13pin plug i had lying around, i use a Ctek 7.0. Makes for a nice slick process.
