Have to agree with you Darras, whilst my 2017 D5 is running beautifully, the depreciation from when I bought it at 14 months old to now at 40 months old, is scary (and it is allegedly a car that holds its value well, I actually read a magazine review before I bought it where they looked at New XC90 -v- year old D5 and their view was the D5 would lose far less money).

I would love less niggly software, less wallowy handling, BUT that means finding £35k to replace with a D300 HSE, to then be worth £28k in under 4 years, so work on losing about £10k a year for the first 4 years.

Think I will add another years LR warranty, hope the crank stays in one piece and another £1500 on tyres and brakes next year.

2023 D300 Metropolitan, Hakuba Silver, Low Range, Solar screen, Deployable towbar, FBH, sidesteps.

Yes, it makes you think. I could buy a one bed flat for one of the kids at Uni for the change price to a new D5. That wouldn’t loose money!

I’ve already got my 255/55/20s Pirelli low noise tyres sitting in my garage until they are needed. An online London firm was offering 4x new take offs for £400 including carriage. It will cost me £60 to have them put on and balanced.

I do feel sorry for the ones on here buying a new car just now. Still each to their own.

although running a D5 once it gets to 5 years old scares the pants off me.....mine will need a gearbox flush and fluid change next year too as will have gone over 60,000 miles then and gearbox manufacturer recommends (JLR don't) a fluid change at 60k esp if it has done offroad or towed and mine has done both lol

Unlucky, but stick with it, I am sure it won’t be as bad as you are predicting.

I suppose I don’t rely on the car for anything, so if it doesn’t work, so what tbh. Laughing

I had a 2015 D4 which I ran to 83k miles and had no issues with. it was used as it should be both towing and over muddy fields etc. I changed to a 2018 D5 last year with only 5k miles on the clock so was a bargain. main reason for the change was the D4 wasn't euro6 and as I am working on HS2 I had to have a euro6 car. also emission charges coming into force in birmingham.
the D5 is a lovely motor and still does everything I was doing with the D4, except it get more to the gallon so I have saved on fuel. I found the D4 seating a little but more comfortable for me on a long run but that is personal preference. I certainly have not regretted changing

I’m going through the same dilemma at the moment. I have a 2014 D4se tech with 50k miles. I’ve owned it since 2015 and 5000 miles.
It’s wanted nothing but regular servicing to date, tyres and new discs and pads.. It’s in excellent condition, a lovely colour(corris grey) with a few desirable extras such as privacy glass, and electric front seats with armrests.
So this year it’s due belts, a full service, I’ve decided to change the gearbox fluid and axles/transfer box fluids as well. Will also need tyres later this year before next winter.
So, I thought do I spend £2000 on it or put that towards a new D5 with all the benefits of warranty, latest engine etc. Nice and shiny, and a change after 6 years of iwnership.
I use my D4 for longer trips because it’s so comfy and for towing my twin axle van, which it does effortlessly returning around 26/27 mpg.
Research showed that I’d need to put in my car plus about £35,000. It will do the same job as the D4 so I’ve decided to keep that.
£35000 will pay for an awful lot of servicing/ repairs. I’ve got a couple of good independents locally if needed.
At 8000 miles a year I think I’ll have it for a few years yet. And the benefit.....
I’m looking at getting something to tinker with at weekends, now do I go for a stag, TR6, MGRV8, Volvo p1800, gt6?? Budget max £20k. Mmmm decisions

Buy a holiday home rather than waste it on metal. There’s a chance it will go up in value and be of more use given your mileage.

2019 Discovery SDV6 HSE Lux Carpathian Grey

Part of the problem is that most of us seem to buy the £70k-ish version of a car that starts around £50k. A much larger percentage of the £20k-ish premium is going to evaporate over the first four years versus what is lost of the £50k base car. Maybe 60-80% of the model premium will disappear over those early years.

I do not quite agree to the 'evaporation'. IT happens if you buy random options instead of packages and kit it out to a price equaling a SE of HSE, but its an "S" model.

Some weeks ago I followed a thread in which a prospective buyer was explained just this. He eventually went for a more expensive HSE (new), with some things he didn't want, less some things he did want, only for the purpose of a better resale in 5 years time.

I was in the position of the buyer recently. As soon as I saw that all but the HSE had the centre storage under the AC controls, I limited my search to HSE only.

What I have seen is loads of stock with dealers without DAB+, no front windscreen heating, no LED headlights (F-Paces, same principles), standing in front courts for years. Eventually sold at a 30-40% discount form new as 'demo' with about 5000km on the clock.

Also a towbar is crazy expensive to fit to a used car. Best is the complete towing pack, this will earn itself in easier resale later on.

The market here (NL) is even more weired. We have a CO2 tax that writes of like melting snow. Next door Germany doesn't have it. So 3-5yr used cars have to compete with German imports with a duty of a fraction of the original CO2 tax, due to a EU court ruling.

So my car (new) was a € 110.000,- in januari 2018. I bought it in december 2020 for € 64.000 with 36 months approved. For me this was an excellent deal. Mr. Green

I agree that glamming up on what ever spec you have is totally wasted. I didn’t always practice what I preach, but have found you get absolutely nothing back from the cost of it.

As for the depreciation of various models, there isn’t the same differential between the new cost and the used cost, they do narrow as equilibrium suggests.

Either way you loose a shed full of money. Ultimately someone has to pay for everyone from the chief exec of LR down to the humble salesman.in the not so humble showroom. Just if you said to someone would you buy something that looses value at £10k per year most would say not. Cars shouldn’t be the exception.

There are numerous variables in the equation. For example, many years ago ( 1970-1990),
German workers would buy a low spec Mercedes E-class and remove the type plate.

They needed to eat bread instead of a warm meal at night for ten years to pay for the car.
But as a reward they could dress up, go on holidays and pretend to be rich.. .. no joke !

For me it was : I can leave it in the bank, eroded by inflation, possibly evaporate in the
near future due to hyperinflation (perpetual creation of money by central banks..),
or I can buy a relatively expensive car and enjoy this at least.

I think these times will be memorable to us and our children, probably not my grandchildren,
since I don't have any yet. The way things are heading (Crimea), we are likely to all go out
with a bang sooner or later. But it won't get any better, that's for sure.

That’s fair enough, each to their own. Just got better things to do with the money. I sometimes think people get sucked into the high prices with monthly payments, either to Land Rover Finance or the banks.

I agree it’s not worth keeping the money in a bank, but land or houses is a better return.

As for our impending Armageddon, nothing would surprise me. I read about the new Russian nuclear torpedo today, that’s being tested, the Poseidon 2M39 torpedo.

The unmanned stealth torpedo is powered by a nuclear reactor and is designed to sneak past coastal defences by moving along the sea bed, experts claim.

It then detonates a warhead of multiple megatons which would create “radioactive tsunamis” - rendering swathes of the target coastline uninhabitable for decades.

Scary stuff and I wouldn’t trust 99% of world leader not to push the button.
