    SD4 Engine failure

    Hi guys.

As some of you may have seen….

My 2017 SD4 recently went bang on the way home from a family holiday.

Piston rings failed on #2 & #4 on an engine that has only covered 25k miles.

Car has no warranty left so i have been left with a quote from JLR to repair for £23,960!

Done some digging and this problem is everywhere, especially on facebook Discovery pages.

I therefore have created a new group to help and meet people in a similar position.

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/2089964327822434/

    Cheers,

    Ian.

I have a few thoughts on this, but they have probably already occurred to you:

    - Even if out of warranty, provided it has a complete JLR service history I would expect them to repair it as a good will gesture

    - Failing that a hefty contribution would be the least they could do

    - I can't imagine a new 4 cyl short block coming in at more than 5K, plus 10 hrs to fit it so where is their cost coming from?

    - last but not least, is the engine really beyond repair? If they have cylinder liners worst case ought to be to fit new liners and pistons + I would think new rings all round. Guess £2K??

I'm probably underestimating the costs (optimist!) but you get the idea...

The point I forgot to mention is to try a non franchise LR specialist. IHMO they are better suited to dealing with serious problems beyond normal servicing.

Example: SAAB dealer quoted me £1000 to replace the clutch master cylinder (engine out job apparently)

Independant SAAB specialist had found it was possible with the right technique to get it out with the engine in place. And rather than a new master cylinder they simply replaced the failed rubber seals. Total cost £100 (this was 25 or so years ago!)

That is what i’m hoping, just crossing my fingers and praying JLR head office come back with a 100% contribution.

I have seen lots of similar stories with a similar outcome.

My car has full JLR service history and has a major service in june. Only thing that will hinder me is the face i bought the car from a Top end trader and not a JLR dealership.

When? You might have a battle but might be worth pursuing the supplying trader... I imagine LR could wriggle out (certainly not saying I agree, if even despite a FMDSH they could not warrant the condition it was given to you in... Good luck! Awful situation.

Land Rover head office havw approved a 100% contribution to get the cars engine replaced.

I am reaching out, feeling the joy, tears are trickling down my face ……….. Rolling with laughter

Seriously, you must be relieved, a few sleepless nights. I through they’d contribute, but I not 100%, maybe 80% all being well. Id think it would be warranted for 3 months or so, but that’s a guess.

Either way, I’d get shot of it. If it goes again, I wouldn’t think they’ll be so generous on another occasion.

Pleased you have a good outcome!

If the car is otherwise OK I think in your position I would get an extended warranty ASAP!

My experience of these is the LR warranty will be expensive but good

My experience of 3rd party extended warranties is that they are cheaper (for a reason) and can be a pain when you claim and you end up making a contribution. The small print can be a big problem. Best example was warranty direct - a pair of things in the suspension failed at the same time so I had to pay an excess of I think £100. But not for the whole job - it was £100 for each side "because they were separate items"

But any warranty is better than nothing, especially since these are complex vehicles.

That’s a fantastic result and exactly as it should be. There really was no need to present you with a £24k heart attack in the interim though!

2018 Discovery Sd4 (240) HSE Lux Corris Grey

Hi Ian thanks for the original post very informative..

I appear to be living this nightmare now with a 2018 D5 SD4 with 55k on the clock. Full MDSH also.

Ian - how did you approach Landrover as I am likewise in the same boat where by the car was purchased from another dealership and not Landrover.. However that said to my knowledge the car has never been touched by anyone other than LR Techs..

Only owned it 7 months. 🙈 just want it back so I can actually enjoy it (if I don’t sell it due to the stress)

I’ll keep you posted on how I get on….

My 2 ltr has stuffed it’s engine whilst towing across northern france. Thank god for caravan club red pennant breakdown cover. They got us recovered to a local garage, then got us and the caravan to a local site near Verdun so that we had somewhere safe to stay, and within 48 hrs had got us a replacement car out from the uk so that we could continue with our hols, and the D5 on a recovery truck back to the uk.

It’s now with a main dealer who’s saying it’s a new engine (38k miles on the clock) and they are awaiting LRCS to come back to them with what to do.

It’s fingers and toes crossed right now 😳
