    Which Tow Bar

Deciding on best tow bar option.
I have a fixed bar in my D4. Has anybody got or seen the fixed one on a D5?
Electric option looks very neat and obviously easy to use, however it's possibly something to go wrong right when you need it!
Detachable obviously also an option, does it get dedicated storage for when not in use?
My dealer has a stock car but no fitted towing option.

Btw- we tow a large heavy twin axle Caravan.

    Cheers for now

We have the deployable and it works great. Looks neat and fine for our big caravan. Detachable seems fine. Fixed looks awful on the D5 in my opinion. There's a photo on here somewhere.

When I'm not in the operating theatre, I'm mountain biking, spending time with my family, running and socialising. I have a Discovery 5 HSE Lux with pretty much every option ticked. This is my first ever Land Rover. Been a rocky road with regards to reliability but we're getting there.

I ordered a deployable (dealer fit) but they are still out of stock and so the dealer has fitted me a removable until the deployable are back in stock.
First use tomorrow with the horse trailer..

Yes, you get a polystyrene insert in the 'underfloor storage area' to keep the keys, the 'empty socket insert' (when you are not using the ball), the 'plastic protection collar' (protects the tow ball locking mechanism) and the tow ball itself.

All looks good quality and is very easy to fit and remove (Similar to D3/4) Wink

Phil, I believe that LR Dealers are no longer able to retro fit the EDT, it is now factory fit only. Perhaps worth double checking with your Dealer ?

Thanks for the info, I will ask them tomorrow.

Although they only fitted the removable on Friday and were still stating that they will chase for the availability dates for the deployable.

I have already paid for it as well!

I will let you know what they say. Wink

That seems very odd. It certainly isn't down to the bits, as they are all alike underneath. The only issue could be software enabling, so there may be some temporary pause. Cannot see that it will be permanent.

There was an email sent to all Dealerships a couple of weeks ago saying they were no longer available for dealer fitting. I only know that, because my Dealer misinterpreted the email and thought that the EDT was no longer available at all, even from the factory?

I suppose this means that there is no chance of us "manuals" ever getting the Tow Assist apps at a later date either Big Cry

Am I to understand if we get a manual tow bar we cannot get the Tow Assist app?

Btw, here is a link and yes it contains going to a US page as being here I guess it just defaults to that for me, but here is one that shows how the detachable one is installed, and has pretty good graphics of how it goes together and is stored as well.

    http://accessories-instructions.landrover....y/G2011177

Note, if your not familiar with this site, go further up under the heading of LAND ROVER ACCESSORY FITTING INSTRUCTIONS, and the button "Land Rover Range", then you can pick any LR model you want and then it breaks down into further groups...but essentially it has just as good instructions and graphics for every accessory that you can get for every model.

I was able to look at great details of just how many of the accessories are installed, for example I was thinking of getting the wireless phone charger cup holder, but then I see that to install it they actually have to drill a fairly good size hole in several of the console parts including what looks like the main console body all to pull the wire through. Which also means its basically meant to stay in there all the time and then you loose a cup holder too. So after seeing that I thought was not worth the damage.

Anyway, is a very interesting site.

Also just wondering if any might know, but the options and PN for the versions of the Detachable one of VPLRT0171 (which I happen to think is the best of all worlds) is not listed among all the other tow bar options for the Discovery in my US build your own pages....could it be possible that is not avalaible in the US for some reason?

    Thanks

    OK, quick update

I spoke to dealer today and he states that they are still awaiting a delivery/availability date for the deployable towbar and is not aware that they are not available for dealer fitting but will enquire with LR.

With the removable hitch I have 'tow assist', as soon as I connected the trailer it recognised the electrics and asked me to select the trailer type, number of axles, length and width of trailer, asked me to fix the target (3 black dots) and drive forwards/backwards, all set-up correctly Thumbs Up

I have paid for the electrically deployable as a dealer fit (not possible to have it as a factory fit on the First Edition) and so still expect it to be fitted at some time, can't complain about the service I am receiving from my local dealer. He has offered to temporary loan me a tow car and now fitted the removable as a stop-gap to get us towing again. Smile

    From the brochure:

"Advanced Tow Assist is only available with Surround Camera, 360° Parking Aid and Capability Plus Pack. A Land Rover approved tow bar is required in order to enable this feature".

Looks like it will work with any LR towbar but retrofitting would require the associated hardware (the rotary knob for starters) AND the other packages. A complete non-starter for me Censored
