Another 'Buying Advice' thread... sorry
As the title says. Always had land rover (still have a D2 and 200tdi defender) but after our last D4 crank failure swore to go away from LR. But inevitably we didn't and ended up with a RR. Never really got on with it though, and while not as catastrophic as the D4 crank, has had it's fair share of issues. So... while the RR is still worth a bit more than scrap value we would like to sell or p/ex for a D5. Not a huge budget 20k max and seen a few within budget. Looking at 3l only as has to tow a horse trailer with 2 fat cobs and other various towing commitments. Doing a bit of reading up 2018 onwards is preferable? Trouble is anything that age within that budget is very high mileage. Looking at 1 for just under 17k but 155k on the clock. In everyone's experience on here is mileage on these a huge issue, or should we really be going as low as possible. Any thoughts? Cheers -

There are a few lower mileage ones out there if you look wider afield...I picked up my '17 plate TD6 HSE last November with only 75k miles on the clock. Like most 4X4's, never mind Land Rovers, you want one that has been looked after service wise, has had a litle bit of love and attention during it's life and hasn't been a company car or lease vehicle at some point in it's history being hammered up and down motorways for a living.
Ask the dealer about owner history...a decent dealer will know what type of owners it's had. One or two owner private sales are also worth looking at if the previous owners have a full recorded service history to go with it. The only downside to private sales are there's no after sales warranty....not that any independent dealer warranty is worth much since if you're lucky, they'll offer 3 or 6 months limited mileage as an average on used Land Rovers.
Proper Land Rover dealerships are always overpriced on their used vehicles, shop around some of the independent 4X4 dealers, you'll find one cheaper...probably with better trade in deals too.
Most importantly if you're looking for one between '17-'19, go for one that's had the timing belts done unless you fancy doing it yourself or forking out the better part of a grand to have them replaced once you've bought it, one at around 100k miles with the belts done is a good buy at the price you're looking for but as always, lower mileage and low ownership is better.
Every 84 months or 110k miles is the recommended interval for the timing belts replacement so most '18 or '19 plate D5's on the market should have already been done...if the timing/cam belt replacement hasn't been recorded as being done during it's service history then insist on them being replaced by the dealer before agreeing a sale. Check the MOT history online...the cleaner the better. Recurring advisories, oil leaks or fails are a no-no.
I wasn't that fussed about the belts not being done when I bought my '17 plate HSE since I have the skills and the tools to do it myself...but I negotiated the dealer into accepting £2k less than he was asking because they hadn't been replaced, even though it had only 2 previous owners and a relatively low mileage for it's age
For towing...technically the 3L SDV6 engine fitted from 2018 onward is more capable than the TDV6 fitted on the pre 2018 models (more hosepower) although my 2017 3L TD6 certainly doesn't lack power when towing. Steer clear of the 2L Ingenium engined D5's, they're underpowered, especially for towing and continue to have fairly serious reliability issues.
Once you get hold of a D5, like the D4, the 10,000 mile service interval suggested by LR is a joke to be honest, with that Ford engine at over 3 years old you really need to be changing the oil and filters at half that interval...at least.
My '15 plate D4 did well over 180k trouble free miles for me with being serviced religiously every 5k miles (outside of the timing belt snapping after I'd had it 3 months with a new engine being fitted by the dealer I bought it from under warranty)... considering I used it around the farm towing livestock trailers and general farm work I couldn't have faulted it. I'm expecting the same from the D5.
The D5's are the same as the D4's, some may come with electronic gremlins or other minor issues to look forward to with trepidation...but look after it, buy a GAP IID tool, service/maintain it regularly and often and it'll look after you. It's a Land Rover, you obviously like them the same as I do so you know they're always going to be a labour of love and a pain in the a**e in equal measures
Atque in perpetuum, frater. Ave atque vale
