Looking at buying a 2017 ingenium

Hi, we are looking at buying a 2017 2.0 sd4. Dealer has changed the timing chain, tensioners and oil pump. It’s on 57k it’s a d5 luxury and wanting 21k. Would anybody look at this or steer clear? I do regular oil changes myself. Thanks. Clark

They are truly incredible cars to drive. I don't know personally if I'd trust a 2017 one, which is now eight years old, but that's only because I can't do any DIY on cars, so it would get expensive for me. It's also a big hulk of a car to own without a warranty. But plenty of people do!

For load lugging, effortless long-distance cruising across countries, and on the road safety, I find this car a top choice. I'd take it over a BMW or Merc any day.

I know there were lots of people reporting engine changes with the 2.0l, but what proportion that is of total sales, is anyone's guess. And I'd imagine not a huge amount in the grand scheme.

Thank you for your input. Appreciate it! I had a discovery 3 that I loved. Just don’t know what to do

Is it a JLR dealership selling the car?

If so, I would be negotiating the inclusion of a JLR warranty package in the deal.

As 747 said, there have been a number of engine failures with the 2L early models. How much that is bad news outselling good news is hard to say. Having some cover from JLR could give some peace of mind,

As I understood it, (I read it somewhere) the demise of this engine is down to poor (unequal) oil distribution to all the bearings, inherent in the design. So even if you do change the oil regularly it may not reach all of the parts it needs too, which could result in bearing collapse. More knowledgeable members may correct me on this understanding.

The 2.0 SD4 engine is probably the worst thing JLR have ever produced. It has acquired the nickname "ingeni-boom". Apparently it is so bad that JLR banned dealers from selling them as "approved used" vehicles because of the high engine replacement claims on the warranty.

Some people who have driven it say it is ok to drive, others say it is underpowered in a D5.

I'd say don't touch it. Get a 3.0L one. For probably very little more than £21k, you should be able to get a SD6 on a 68 plate, or get a TD6 on a 17 plate and have some change left over.

I should add, I only know of one other Disco owner, my brother in law. He followed me down the Discovery route, first in a D4, then to a D5. I bought the 3l, he bought the 2l (I think circa 18/24 months old when he got it). And his engine went boom, and he was months waiting whilst LR put a refurb'd engine in it under warranty. That then had problems, but all was sorted under warranty and he loves the car.

The suggestion to buy the 3,0l, if you can, would give you some added confidence. I'm on my second, and both have been great engines. Second 3.0l D5 that is, not a second engine in the same car! Laughing

Like the others above have mentioned, if you're set on a Disco 5, I would suggest you go for a '17 plate 3.0L TD6 or '18 plate 3.0L SDV6 rather than the 2.0L SD4 Ingenium for the same very pertinent advice that JonM and Wolfpack gave.
Added to that, although the D5 chassis is slightly lighter than the D3 or D4...it still hefts in at around 2t...that's a lot of car to shift around on a 4 cylinder 2.0L Ford engine...especially not a very good one.

    I have a '17 plate 3.0L TD6 which I maintain myself...simply can't fault it... so far. Whistle

Land Rover is a poisoned chalice with little recourse to their customer services, who are dreadful.

I presume the price of the 2lt Disco is attractive and that you don’t have the funds to go after a 3lt one.

You’ll also bulk at the cost of the only warranty worth having the LR named one if it qualifies!

My yearly warranty premium is now £1,640 and I am on my third engine from new with 50k odd miles. A ball park figure for that is £16k a pop and they turn it round in about 8 weeks.

Then there’s the servicing and other costs like insurance, particularly if you’re in an urban area.

If you’re on a budget, forget it.

If you want to have a look at a Facebook group with over 20,000 members, the majority who’ve had terrible problems with all models of LRs including the new Defender and engine sizes look at the below link. Every day someone is offering to flog their broken LR for scrap value.

I will eventually buy something else, at the moment a combination of can’t be arsed, better things to throw money at, but then I don’t need it as a daily run around, it can sit a week without turning a cog, so if it doesn’t work, it’s not the end of the world. It depends on attitude to breaking down on the road.
