    Can’t Fill Up

Going to the airport to fly out for a week tomorrow at 04:00, that’s the good bit……

I have got over 200 miles in the tank but thought I would top up, nozzle went in fine but kept cutting out, I eventually gave up when the filler overflowed, I had spent just over £5. It was a diesel pump and the reading showed it was diesel. Tried another garage with exactly the same result, got just under £5 this time.

I have never had a problem filling before. Looking at it, the tank looks to have an active misfuel flap which opens fine with the correct nozzle.

I am not overly concerned about tomorrow, the airport is only about 35 miles away but will need to resolve when we get back.

If you can see that yellow barrier in the fuel filler with a little book logo on it, you'll need a misfuel reset tool to reset it. They're about a fiver on Amazon or Ebay, or pop into a local motor factors... or even Halfords... and pick one up.

It's a Disco 4 video...but it's the same process on every make of car using the same tool.

    Thanks Mole.

I did look down the pipe once I had figured how to open the automatic misfuel valve. There is nothing in there! I can’t see a way to get a good picture but it looks clear, I can see the bend in the pipe which is further down than a passive misfuel valve would be…..

That's a strange one, the only other thing that comes to mind outside of the misfuel flap is the lower fuel filler hose has become restricted somehow or the vent tube is blocked or twisted.

Did you use a misfuel tool to retract the misfuel flap or did you use a screwdriver or something? You might need to set off the active flap again and use a proper tool to retract it...

Outside of that...it may mean a visit to a decent garage for a looksee Neutral

Mine comes with this (key for scale)

It fits in the filler and opens the automatic misfuel valve which looks like this:

With the white device fitted I can see the pipe to the first bend but can’t get a picture of that 😂.

From the iGuide there is supposed to be two types but who knows…..

My filler neck looks exactly the same...but you shouldn't need the plastic funnel to refuel...which might be the issue if that plastic collar is blocking the vent tube. Try filling up without using the plastic funnel, it should be fine...that metal valve you can see just moves out of the way when you stick the fuel pump nozzle in.

Sorry, misleading you. I don’t use it to fill up, I only used it to open the valve to look inside, only just found it when searching for a yellow tool ….. The valve opens just fine when you stick the right size nozzle in at the fuel pump

    Gotcha...apologies there. Embarassed

I'm still leaning toward it being an issue with the vent tube...which allows air to escape when fuel goes in...for want of a better description. If that's blocked or not working for some reason, it would reproduce the symptoms you're having...

Is that accessible without ripping things apart? Could be a job for when we get back or even a trip to an indi.

    Thanks for your help.

Let me have a scope around the net and see if I can find a video or something. Replacing the bottom (usually rubber composite) fuel filler tube isn't difficult...but not having done that on my D5...or crawled under to have a look, I'd just be guessing on past experiences with different vehicles.

Looks like a job for an indi. Will get it booked in. Hope it gets me there and back 🤞.

Apologies for not being much help PRH, I really couldn't find any D5 related vids on the fuel filler pipe at all...so if you find what's causing your issue, please post it up.

Anything fault related that has an eventual fix or solution is very handy...If I do find anything, I'll post it up as well. Thumbs Up

It’s a reasonably common problem. Normally associated with a particular fuel pump rather than any fault with the car. You just seem to hit it unlucky with two filling stations.

    Fingers crossed then Darras.

For those waiting with bated breath, the car got us to the airport without missing a beat.

No nead for apologies Mole, it’s hard without having the car in front of you.

Will try and fill up when we get home.

    Thanks all.
