new member with a couple of questions
Hi all
Thank you for letting me join. I have owned a few Land Rover vehicles over the years. I had a Range Rover classic 3.9, P38 4.6 (nightmare car), Discovery 2 TD5 (brilliant car had this for 7.5 years), and a Range Rover sport 2005 2.7.
After being away from the brand for a few years, I have been looking at a couple of Disco 5's local to me. One is a 2020 landmark 3.0 SDV6 with 104000 miles on the clock service history to 92000 miles. This is in Santory black with black interior. £23999.
The next car is a 2019 HSE LUX also with the 3.0 SDV6, this car has 119000 miles. Landrover history to 99000 miles, again in Santory black with black interior. This car is £23499.
So my questions are, is the landmark worth the extra ?
What do you think of these cars at this sort of mileage ?
Will there be plenty of life left in the engine, (crank) Turbo, Gearbox ?
Thank you all in advance for any advice / input

Hi Squizzel, welcome to the dark side
The Landmark should have almost everything that the HSE Lux has fitted given the age, 2020 is just pre-facelift so the Landmark versions are usually all the bells and whistles kinda thing, The HSE Lux's are also very well fitted out options wise, it'll also have a tilt and slide sunroof and rear seat entertainment if that floats your boat...
As for reliability...check that both have had the timing belts replaced, they're both at the age and mileage where it's now a necessity. You should ask the dealer to have them replaced as a condition of the sale if they haven't already been done...Timing belt replacement interval is 7 years or 110k miles, both of those D5's are now at that point where the next major service would require and include timing belts... So unless you have a spare £1200 or more (£2k+ at a main LR dealership) to have the belts replaced out of your own pocket after you've bought it, I'd fully expect the dealer to either replace the belts or reduce the price accordingly.
When I bought my 2017 HSE last year, I negotiated a £2k reduction in the sale price as the belts hadn't been done...the car had only done 75k miles but due to it's age, were due to be replaced.
I didn't tell the dealer that I was perfectly capable of replacing the belts myself though
As for the engine, the 3.0L SDV6 is a decently reliable powerplant. The engineering weakness in the D4's 3.0L SDV6 with the chocolate crankshaft has all but been eradicated...at least I've never heard of a D5 suffering a crankshaft failure.
At those sorts of mileages though, I'd drop the oil and filter service interval to every 5,500 miles instead of LR's recommended 10,000. The 8 speed ZF gearboxes are solid, and need very little servicing. At higher mileages and as preventative maintenance, I'd suggest a gearbox flush and oil/filter change...apart from that, they're good.
The main reported reliability issue with both the 3.0L TDV6 and later SDV6 engines on the pre facelift D5 is the DPF system...like all DPF's fitted to modern diesel engines, they're pernickety and occasionally troublesome. However, the D5's DPF is no more troublesome than any other in reality.
Other niggly D5 faults...window regulators and an occasional report of windscreen leaks...
I've no doubt someone will give you an exhaustive list of every single D5 fault ever reported on the internet...but genuinely, staying away from the 2.0L Ingenium engines... It's not a bad vehicle overall.
For me personally given the same choice (assuming both have had the belts replaced), I'd be swayed toward the Landmark if it indeed has those extra toys fitted... but have a look around them both and see which one fits you better
Apologies for the wall of text

The Landmark as standard was an SE with fixed glass roof, Meridian stereo, dynamic exterior pack and black wheels. Alot of cars also had alot of extras fitted especially the last few pre-facelift cars.
24MY D300 Dynamic SE, Fuji White, Deployable Towbar, full size spare.
Gone 20MY SDV6 Landmark, Indus Silver, Deployable Towbar, 360 Cameras -

Hi mate I’ve recently purchased this lux and I’m happy with it, 98,000 miles timing belts done for £19,500
Is a 17 plate. I’m on a camping holiday with it at the moment and it has the power to tow my twin axle but I’ve read the messages on towing and I’ve felt the same so I need to check nose weight and tyre pressures
If your not towing no worries -

Thanks for the responses. I have looked down the specs, and the 19 plate HSE lux has more options on it. So i think i will go and look at that one. I don't tow so that's not a problem. One of the reasons i am looking at these is because my wife has just had major spine surgery. It went wrong, and she had to have further emergency surgery. With the air suspension she finds it easier to get in and out of the Discovery, or Range Rover Sport. But the sport insurance is insain round here. I have been driving 40 years, have 34 years no claim, and the cheapest quote is £2346.00. For the Discovery the cheapest is £1560.00.
Also the suspension will be softer for her, as the car i have at the moment has very hard suspension, and a low roofline.
One more question, will the gearbox need flushing at this mileage ?
Thank you all
Mark

If the gearbox is fine with no sluggish changes across the range...it's good. The ZF gearbox is generally regarded as being relatively trouble free.
I suggested a gearbox flush and oil/filter change only as future preventative maintenance...same with the 5.5k miles engine oil and filter changes at higher mileages. Look after it in the long run and it'll look after you and yours
My wife is also disabled with mobility issues after going through several operations...we find that fitted sidesteps for her getting in and out are a great help in that regard. You can also select the suspension to automatically drop to access height when parked if that helps
As for insurance...I've heard the horror stories about UK mainland premiums from a few of the guys on here. I'm lucky enough to live on a remote and isolated island, my last renewal quote was £485 fully comp for the D5, exactly £100 more than it was for the D4

I can vouch for the window regulator on a 2019 D5 HSE Lux playing up - happened twice but covered under warranty both times. Also my car is in the dealers again under warranty with an engine fault all to do with the DPF but not the filter. Latest news is the front of the exhaust is seized - whatever that means.
Apart from that the car has been great. For comparison Ive been given a loan car for last 2 weeks which is an almost new Defender 110. Very smooth ride but seems so big and need a ladder to get into it!
Although nice I’m not that smitten to shell out £80K on one as perfectly happy with the D5.
On the insurance front my renewal just came up with LV. lLast year was £635 and renewal quoted at £656. A quick phone call saying comparison sites quote cheaper and premium reduced to £618 which I’m happy with after all the horror stories I’ve read. I live in Whitstable so not sure if that’s good or bad for insurance purposes.
Hastings Insurance also gave very good quotes so may be worth a look. -

Hastings are very slippery Terry. Once I’d renewed they informed me I had agreed to fit a steering wheel lock whilst parked over night ( I hadn’t agreed that at all ) AND have a Thatcham approved tracking system installed ( not agreed to do that either ).
I bought a wheel lock for £30 and it’s no hassle to be fair, and will have the tracker installed on Tuesday as it’s a decent thing and will provide peace of mind but Hastings do like to change the rules mid-term so if you do go with them, be careful.
S5 Tracker is £250 fitted then around £12 per month subscription.
I actually thought about simply swapping insurance companies and paying another £100 price hike but didn’t bother as I quite like the idea of a tracker. -

Shouldn't the In Control remote app count as a GPS tracking system? There's absolutely no difference of how it operates to an after market 'Thatcham approved' tracker.

Interesting that you should say that because I initially thought the same.
However, I tried checking a number of vehicle feature whilst away from my car and to my surprise, the screen was blank on my phone. Now, I’m no expert but there appears to be something going on between my car via Bluetooth to get all the features showing on my phone.
Also, the in built journeys feature is not Thatcham S5 or S7 approved so I don’t want to give the insurance company any inkling they can wriggle out of any potential claim.😩
Well, I’ve just turned off Bluetooth on my phone and I’m still getting all the features up. I’m obviously wrong about the Bluetooth connection.🤷🏻♂️ -

The In Control app isn't connected via Bluetooth...or the remote climate start, remote locking and vehicle location display wouldn't work outside of the 20 metre or so Bluetooth range from the vehicle...It's also a point to note that I don't have a data sim card in the car nor use the onboard LR navigation or maps. My LR navigation account isn't activated on the car ...because it requires me to have a sim card installed to log in to it.
I do get the "Welcome, Mole. Please sign in to your account." message on the centre Nav screen since I linked up my In Control account though.
As long as the car and my phone can receive a mobile phone signal, In Control will work....which might be a restriction of In Control as opposed to a Thatcham approved GPS tracking device...
That said, my In Control app shows me that the Bling Barge at this moment is 5.2 miles away parked at home and is locked, alarmed, has no current issues and has a full tank of fuel in it. The last recorded journey was 3.4 miles from the local shop to it's current location yesterday at 15.06.
Beep and Flash, remote climate start and lock/unlock all work....If I select the 'navigate to' arrow from the In Control home screen location icon, it not only shows me where the car is parked to within 1 metre on Google maps (with a street view image of the farm from the end of my drive) but shows me where I am to within 1 metre (with my phone) and gives voiced navigation directions via Google maps to get to where the car is...so the Bling Barge has to be GPS located and tracked by the In Control app, same as my phone. They've both been linked since I went through the In Control set up process on the phone with the lovely Glynis.
Like I said, that's just the In Control app accessing Google maps and the Bling Barge live in real time via the 4G connection on my phone. I'm standing in the middle of a neighbour's field giving him a hand loading some fresh baling twine into his baler...well...I'm drinking a mug of very nice Douwe Egberts coffee from his flask and doing more blethering than actually helping...but you get the idea

Is the “in control app” you refer to the “LR Remote” app?
I’ve tried to set up an In Control account but never receive the confirmation email with a link to activate but the LR Remote app does still work.🤷🏻♂️
I’ve never understood why there’s a SIM card slot. Not got a scooby what that does, it’s far too complicated for me. -

That's the one...LR remote or In Control app, same thing. You probably need to phone the lovely Glynis and get her to walk you through setting up In Control though. The car bit is easy and takes 5 mins, setting up the in control account needs Glynis (or whoever) at In control customer support to remove the previous owners details (if that ghostly Jonny is still haunting your D5) then setting up your own account.
You can't set an In control account for the remote app up without In control customer support...I tried already if you remember the other thread. If it's already set up, you can check the subscription expiry date from the ...More/subscriptions tab on the LR remote app.
Phone: 0370 500 0500 then option 3 for In Control customer support if you need them...they really are very helpful.
There's another phone app for the remote route planner that's tied in with a LR navigation and maps account, (which needs a data sim card in the car slot) but according to PRH, who brought the subject of the remote route planner up on another thread, LR customer services informed him that the remote route planner function is now discontinued and they no longer support it
I've never used the onboard Nav stuff since my phone automatically connects via Android Auto when I jump in the car... The LR onboard Navigation and maps, which is where you see the 'sign into your account' message on the nav screen, needs a data only sim card for live traffic updates and the like...which is a bit of a pointless palaver since Google maps or Apple maps do that automatically from your phone via Android Auto or Apple Carplay anyway

Thanks for that.
I spoke to the call centre only last week, I needed to subscribe to the tracking service ( JLR have a specific name for this but I can’t recall what it is ) but after confirming ownership via the V5, I was informed my vehicle didn’t have a JLR tracker installed so that fell flat.
I did explain I wasn’t getting the confirmation email and I’m sure she said it was irrelevant.🤷🏻♂️
I’ve had an S5 compliant tracker installed today and it works well. Can see the car on a map via yet another app.🙄
I previously reset the car to default settings so I’m presuming the “Welcome Jonny” message has gone now, I’ve certainly not seen it since. -

The confirmation email is only for your own info. The registration, subscription, vehicle and account details are all stored and controlled by LR InControl at their end. Never heard of a JLR tracker not being fitted...that's a new one on me, I wasn't aware that it was an optional package...
I found this after a bit of digging...InControl secure. Now, I'm not sure if this is an older or completely different subscription service from the rest of the In Control remote premium services...but from what I can gather, it's now called 'InControl Protect'. It has a little shield icon next to it on the app...Maybe someone more in the know could inform?
Quote:
How do I access my insurance certificate?
InControl Secure is Thatcham accredited (CAT 6), a UK quality standard for stolen vehicle tracking
systems. The Thatcham security testing regime is considered to be one of the most rigorous in the
world and acts as a benchmark for crime prevention measures internationally.
Thatcham CAT 6 is recognised by major insurers and may allow you to get a premium discount.
You can view and print the certificate of Thatcham compliance by clicking on the “View Certificate” link on the right side of the vehicle dashboard page.
On my remote app/subscriptions page I have:
Pro services
Protect (which I assume is the previously known 'InControl Secure' feature?)
Remote premium
Which all now expire in 2027...I took out a 2 year subscription for £60 once the month FOC that Glynis gave me ran out. So, unless I'm mistaken...it looks like InControl Protect is indeed Thatcham CAT6 accredited...which kinda makes sense since I can GPS track/locate the car via the app and from my Land Rover InControl web account page.
If I can track the Bling Barge via GPS...so can JLR or the coppers if it got nicked...
...or I could phone up a few old friends to 'accidentally' drop a Hellfire missile onto it from a drone to surprise some enterprising chavs trying to file the VIN number off the engine in a lockup behind some flats in Glasgow
