Black roof pack removal/replacement

I am considering removing a section of the black trim on my roof to try to find and fix a leak in the windscreen seal with the car body. ( https://disco5.co.uk/forum/thread4229.html n)

The section that aligns with the roof bar position is sitting proud and obscuring the seal edge. Is this removal a destructive process? I have been told you cannot buy single parts of the kit…you have to buy a complete roof kit!! Obviously a daunting and costly exercise.

The sections have rubber skirts showing but these are not pressed to the roof allowing water (and a lot of muck with it ) to go under. Lifting and excavating underneath with a screwdriver released almost a ploughed field, without getting under there I have no hope of finding the exact place where the seal is compromised.

Help please

Another thought… if I were to fit roof rails, do those black strips have to come off anyway or do they have to be modified and refitted?

Narpy is the best one to ask about the roof rails since he's fitted a set and modified the existing runners to suit the fitment. The Bling Barge came with roof rails already fitted... so never having fitted a set or removed the roof runners, I'd be left with searching through YouTube vids for 2nd hand info... Neutral

If he doesn't pick this one up...drop him a PM Thumbs Up

Thanks will do.

Events are moving fast in the leaking windscreen investigation. (well you’ve got to get the bee from under your bonnet). I actually YouTubed the subject and discovered enough to have courage to bend the plastic trip high enough to see what was going on.

There are basically 2 components to each side. The rear covers are short and black and can be refitted once removed. The long ditch finishers that run up to the windscreen are colour coded and you’ll probably break some clips in removing them but they are usually refitable with some luck and a tube of Tiger Seal at the ready just in case.
My channels were pretty grime filled once I removed the ditch finishers but as I was fitting roof rails too, these held the ditch finishers in place once they were screwed down.

I strongly suspect water will get under the ditch finishers as they are not water tight so if you do remove them, make sure you have sealant/Tiger Seal/panel adhesive on site so you can seal them up once reinstalling them.
Whilst you’re in there, it just might be worthwhile ensuring the two forward screws are tight + sealed up as this will be a perfect place for water ingress. There’s a photo in this thread: Linky

You can buy the components separately, well, in pairs but they are hellishly expensive and will cost you over £100 per side, which may sound reasonable but is a rip off for what they actually are. Also, you’ll only be able to buy black coloured ditch finishers as they are not available as colour coded items.
Take your time removing them ( they just prise up ) and have some sealant ready just in case and you’ll be fine.😉

Thanks.
I wish I had seen that video before raising the front ditch finisher …. how far back the fittings were.
I could have lifted it higher out of the way to get better access to the leak area and done more cleaning, But it seemed quite firm so didn’t want to force it. Hopeful I fixed it, if not, I may have a better chance next time.

Those ditch finishers are not exactly heavy gauge alloy and will bend if you over stress them. Once damaged, you’re limited to the black only option and painting them which is just a step too far IMHO.

Take your time and stick em down if you need to but don’t forget to check the two forward screws and the front edge fitment.😉

I’m sure you’ll be fine.👍🏻
