    Service Cost

What kind of price are people being charged for main dealer service these days? Just been quoted £750 for the first two year service, on top of which they charge an extra £50 for a loan car!

All of the pricing is on the Website. I think its pretty standard across the UK.

That’s par for the course…and why I used an Indy (£450) from year 3

Was expecting about £500, obviously I'm out of touch!

It was the extra charge for a courtesy loan car that annoyed me a bit, some of the pain of paying through the nose for main dealer servicing used to be softened by the fact that you usually got a chance to try out a pretty decent new model while your own was in for a service, and it's an expected part of the service for me. Most of the 6 or 7 year 'big service' expense depends if the timing belts have been done before you bought the car or not.

The Bling Barge didn't have them done when I bought it at 7 years old and 75k miles so I negotiated a fairly decent £2k reduction in the asking price because of it. I didn't mention to the dealer I'd be doing the work myself of course. An auxiliary belt, both timing belts plus tensioners, idlers and both main camshaft pulleys cost me roughly £300.

Run of the mill oil and filters service prices will vary wildly outside of official dealers, averaging out between £400 to £600. Branded service consumables are still on the expensive side, even if you DIY it. The oil being the biggest expense at either side of £100 for 6L of 5W-30 C1 oil, £40 for a decent branded fuel filter and £60 for the air and oil filters. At a garage or dealership, half of what you're paying is still labour charges. I use a washable air filter and cabin pollen filter (from Pipercross and K&N respectively) so they never need replacing.

At an Indy garage though, if you're paying over £500, find somewhere cheaper...a basic oil and filters service takes less than 2 hours.

Timing belt replacements average between £750-£1200 at a good indy, mostly north of £1.5k at a dealership.
