MY2020 - Various Issues
Hi folks,
We got our new (to us) 2020 Discovery 5 HSE back in September. It’s the 2.0 diesel Ingenium variant and we love it. It hasn’t been without its issues though.
We bought the car from a LR main dealer and within a few days of collecting the car, we had an engine management light. LR sent someone to the house and it turned out to be a broken wire which was repaired there and then on the driveway. I also noticed that the engine never quite reached its proper running temperature and the convenience locking only worked with one key. Thermostat was to blame for the temperature issue and the locking issue was a faulty control module. Both were repaired by LR under warranty.
We now have some other issues though……..
1) An asthmatic wheezing sound when the engine is under extreme load.
2) A frequency-induced rattle at tickover that almost disappears when the throttle is applied. You can still hear a faint rattle during low speed running.
3) Engine uses around 500ml of oil per 1500 miles
4) when the oil filler cap is loosened and placed on top of the filler cap, it bobs up and down significantly. Also, the oil appears to be leaking where the plastic filler extension meets the top of the cam cover. Not sure if excess pressure is causing it to lift enough to let oil past (it’s only secured with one offset fixing).
5) Intermittent airbag warning light.
6) Random slow speed activation of nearside parking sensors when there is nothing there.
7) Intermittent failure of the tailgate to close. On inspection, it looks like the covering to the cable supporting the fold-down shelf has disintegrated.
The other thing I have noticed - the vehicle has been serviced by the LR main dealer at its prescribed service intervals. However, I am not generally a fan of 21k intervals, so have done an interim oil change myself at around 10k. When I removed the sump plug, there was about 3/4” of sludge on the end of the plug. Not really something I was expecting on an engine with less than 65k miles on it!
Anybody got any comments or thoughts on the above? I am thinking about booking it in under warranty to get these issues looked at in any case but curious if anybody has any similar experiences.
Cheers,
Steven

Unfortunately, you've written the biggest problem in your first line......

The 3L engines are fantastic, but the 2L has earned itself the nickname "IngeniBOOM!" because of its woeful reliability and frequent failures.
I had heard that main dealers stopped selling used 2L D5s because of the frequent problems.
It's probably too late now, but if you can, I'd suggest rejecting the car and returning it for a refund then buying a 3L version instead. If you can't do that, then use the warranty to it's maximum and either extend the warrant or sell the car before it expires.
Sorry not to have anything helpful to say.

Hi there and thanks for the reply.
I had hoped if we fettled it (long runs to allow proper regen and frequent oil changes to deal with dilution) we might have a little bit more luck……
We have a full extended LR warranty and will be looking to extend this indefinitely when due for renewal as long as LR are willing to provide it. It’s probably paid for itself already for this year.
Hopefully I won’t have any problems getting the issues we have resolved via the warranty as we do really like the car.
