    MY2020 - Various Issues

    Hi folks,

We got our new (to us) 2020 Discovery 5 HSE back in September. It’s the 2.0 diesel Ingenium variant and we love it. It hasn’t been without its issues though.

We bought the car from a LR main dealer and within a few days of collecting the car, we had an engine management light. LR sent someone to the house and it turned out to be a broken wire which was repaired there and then on the driveway. I also noticed that the engine never quite reached its proper running temperature and the convenience locking only worked with one key. Thermostat was to blame for the temperature issue and the locking issue was a faulty control module. Both were repaired by LR under warranty.

We now have some other issues though……..

    1) An asthmatic wheezing sound when the engine is under extreme load.
    2) A frequency-induced rattle at tickover that almost disappears when the throttle is applied. You can still hear a faint rattle during low speed running.
    3) Engine uses around 500ml of oil per 1500 miles
    4) when the oil filler cap is loosened and placed on top of the filler cap, it bobs up and down significantly. Also, the oil appears to be leaking where the plastic filler extension meets the top of the cam cover. Not sure if excess pressure is causing it to lift enough to let oil past (it’s only secured with one offset fixing).
    5) Intermittent airbag warning light.
    6) Random slow speed activation of nearside parking sensors when there is nothing there.
    7) Intermittent failure of the tailgate to close. On inspection, it looks like the covering to the cable supporting the fold-down shelf has disintegrated.

The other thing I have noticed - the vehicle has been serviced by the LR main dealer at its prescribed service intervals. However, I am not generally a fan of 21k intervals, so have done an interim oil change myself at around 10k. When I removed the sump plug, there was about 3/4” of sludge on the end of the plug. Not really something I was expecting on an engine with less than 65k miles on it!

Anybody got any comments or thoughts on the above? I am thinking about booking it in under warranty to get these issues looked at in any case but curious if anybody has any similar experiences.

    Cheers,

    Steven

Unfortunately, you've written the biggest problem in your first line......

It’s the 2.0 diesel Ingenium variant

The 3L engines are fantastic, but the 2L has earned itself the nickname "IngeniBOOM!" because of its woeful reliability and frequent failures.

I had heard that main dealers stopped selling used 2L D5s because of the frequent problems.

It's probably too late now, but if you can, I'd suggest rejecting the car and returning it for a refund then buying a 3L version instead. If you can't do that, then use the warranty to it's maximum and either extend the warrant or sell the car before it expires.

Sorry not to have anything helpful to say.

Hi there and thanks for the reply.

I had hoped if we fettled it (long runs to allow proper regen and frequent oil changes to deal with dilution) we might have a little bit more luck……

We have a full extended LR warranty and will be looking to extend this indefinitely when due for renewal as long as LR are willing to provide it. It’s probably paid for itself already for this year.

Hopefully I won’t have any problems getting the issues we have resolved via the warranty as we do really like the car.

The best bit of advice to get rid of it.

My one was on engine No.3 in 60k miles and it was under a LR warranty, which you must keep up, but it increases in cost. They wanted basically £1,700 for a years renewal when I got rid of mine.

Bur even accepting that it doesn’t cost you for the repair, it’s the sheer inconvenience of it all, plus there are quite a few exceptions to the warranty.

When Id worked out between the warranty, servicing, renewal of rotas and pads, tyres this year was going to cost me bout £4.5-5k, then I sold it.

I got a MG HS PHEV Trophy and it’s a marvellous car. Competitively priced. More tech than you can throw a stick at. 19” wheels, £200 service. It makes the LR look obsolete. Just slightly smaller than the Disco and you get 7 years warranty.

It doesn’t use petrol unless you exceed the 75 mile battery range, so in three months and 1,500 miles, it’s not used any petrol and it works out just using the electric at £67, whereas diesel would have cost me £350.

Multiply that up to get the yearly saving or if you did 15k miles, then £670 against £3,500.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Jon and Darras here. They both offer very wise advice from long experience.

If you do keep it, forget about the marketing driven nonsense of 21k between oil and filter changes...oil and filter need to be changed at least every 5k miles, especially with that underpowered 2L Ingenium engine at over 60k miles. Sadly, that ridiculous 21k manufacturer recommended service interval has probably done the damage before you even bought the car.

I really hope it works out for you with the car despite the odds, but it's already showing some worrying symptoms from your description...what sounds to me like timing chain rattle, the excessive oil consumption and thick sludge on the sump plug being the ones I'd be most concerned about. All of those are big red flags to anyone who's ever waved a set of spanners at an engine.

Apologies that I can't really offer a small beacon of positivity...and I really dislike coming over like a harbinger of doom for anyone who obviously loves their D5... but that 2L Ingenium engine has caused more than it's fair share of heartache for far too many people.

We all love our D5's here...well...apart from Darras, but he was driven auld and crabbit from having owned an Ingenium in the first place. He used to be such a nice man. Whistle

I’ve still got a few Disco add ons to sell when I’ve time.

Meantime I’ve been playing with my new toy. It’s so flipping quick! 😂

Ooo, we like bikes in our house, until recently I had a garage full of them. That is very tasty indeed. Thumbs Up
