    2017 2.0lt Battery

    Hi

My discovery is currently at main dealer having been recovered there start of the week.

Symptoms- whilst driving, infotainment screen started randomly restarting. Wipers started juddering, as if losing power. Car ran fine

Arrived at destination and turned car off- had a "vehicle not in park" message which was unusual.

Car then wouldn't start. Hazards wouldn't work. Wouldn't lock- completely unresponsive, with the only sign of power being the rear side lights on.

AA arrived via land rover assist- connected battery pack and car started. Told me battery was putting out 13v. Alternator seemed good, but couldn't diagnose. Car recovered to main dealer.

They've now rang me to say it needs a new battery (stop start hasn't worked properly for a while).

    They want £650 to fit!

Symptoms sound more than a dodgy battery to me...

    Any thoughts?

It sounds more like a dodgy main battery earthing stud...it was a known fault on some vehicles. With the battery putting out 13v after a boost start, it may be a contributing factor but your list of symptoms definitely don't seem like a low battery fault...no matter what the dealership are telling you.

If the car broke down as in your case, it was usually recalled or put to a dealership and the faulty earth stud (centre of pic next to fingers) was redrilled and replaced...but a common fix at the roadside, which I'm a bit bewildered that LR assist didn't look at given your symptoms, was to use an alternative earthing point to get you going...there's a few earthing points in the battery compartment that work just as well (as shown in pic) until a new earth stud can be fitted...if at all. Once the earth strap is moved, it's usually fine.

I'd get the dealership to look at the battery earth too rather than just replace the battery.

Thanks. I'm planning on replacing the battery myself, as the quoted replacement price is extortionate- but won't get a chance to collect until tomorrow at least. Am very keen to retain the warranty but the dealer confirmed fitting else where won't affect it- and £400 over the odds for a battery change is a tad extreme!

I'd not mentioned- the stop/start hasn't worked for a little while- presume that's a battery symptom? Or could that too be down to earth?

I've heard from a few folk on here that their auto stop/start doesn't seem to work reliably so it seems it's not an uncommon thing... it may be tied to a low battery but I couldn't say for certain. I've never used the auto stop/start living where I do.

I've also edited the CCF with my IID tool so the stop/start function always remembers what it was last set to instead of being enabled by default. Since I never use it, it now defaults to being off when I start the engine.

As for battery replacement, I usually get mine online from Tayna Batteries. It's one of the small prices we pay for being a bit geographically challenged...can't just pop round to the nearest Halfrauds for a new battery. Laughing
