    Heated steering wheel retrofit, MY21+

Hi, have just carried this out so thought I would post the details for others looking to do the same.
    You will need:

      Heated steering wheel.
Steering wheel wiring loom that sits behind the horn plate.
RH steering wheel switch pack with heated wheel option.
Clock spring and stalks (all one unit) compatible with heated wheel.
GAP iid tool or similar to activate the wheel in the CCF.

The wiring and even the fuse (F43) is all in place up to the clock spring but from there on it is different if the heated wheel was not fitted from the factory.
I was lucky and found a wheel complete and the clock spring from a breakers from a 2024 car.
The fitting process is straight forward and there is a very good video that Powerfull UK did on the Defender which is a similar process. (Thanks Simon)
The airbag can be a bit awkward to release but once you can feel the springs it will release.
The lower steering column cowl is only held on with two screws but you have to be careful when removing it as the wiring is tight to the key detector fixed to the cowl.
The steering wheel comes off easily and is already marked for position so no issues there.
The torque setting for the wheel is 47Nm.
The clock spring and stalks are only held on with two 7mm bolts on top of the column.
I was concerned about the second hand clock spring not being centred but Land Rover in their infinite wisdom have a switch that activates when it is taken off the steering column that locks it in position.
For the CCF activations I turned on the following:

    EUCD-171 Heated Steering Wheel
    MultiCAN-672 SlcHeatedSteerWhl

I'm happy to get this done as it was the one feature not on my car that I would have missed from the D4.
I should have taken more photos whilst doing the work but if anyone is doing this and has any questions just let me know.

    Fantastic job Baz. Bow down

I've been tempted to do the retrofit since it's one of the few factory extras not already fitted to the Bling Barge...and I do miss it being up here in the frozen north.

It must be an old people thing...can't remember ever having cold hands when I was younger. I spent my life riding a Harley all seasons with no heated grips. Laughing

Thanks Mole, it's one of those features that sounds like a gimmick but is actually really good.
Once you have had one it's difficult to give up.
Have just updated the list of items needed because you do need the heated version of the wiring loom that sits behind the horn plate in the steering wheel.
My second hand wheel came complete to I didn't need to pick up the parts separately.
That's a great bike photo but it does look cold!

The only issue with the Bling Barge (being an early 17 plate HSE) is that the steering wheel and controls were only fitted for that year and were all updated in 2018 along with adding a full digital dashboard.

I have the old school Disco 4 style analogue speedo and tacho...through choice, and one of the main reasons I didn't go for a later model D5 when I was looking to buy. I never grew into liking digital TFT dashboards. It also has the slightly less fussy single turbo 3.0L TD6 engine rather than the twin turbo SDV6 fitted in the 2018-2020 pre-facelift D5's.

One of my mates has a 2017 HSE lux with the analogue dials and a heated wheel (button marked with arrow)...so I know they're about, it's just finding an online breaker that has one...

There's a company down your neck of the woods in Maidstone LR-Chip that offers all sorts of interesting retrofits on D5's. Heated wheel retrofit costs around £1500.

Besides the steep price and having to trust someone else waving a set of spanners at the Bling Barge...it's a bit too far for me travel wise. It's not just the drive, I don't mind that...but it takes me 2 days and 2 ferries just to get to mainland Scotland from here. Neutral

There’s plenty used heated steering wheels, controls and clock springs on the go. £250 tops and half an hour of your time fitting. Just disconnect the battery prior to mucking about, in case the airbag deploys accidently.

It’s a hardwire only job. No need for coding ,but if you're OCD there is a tick box on the OBD reader menu, but it does absolutely nothing.

I just had a mental image of me being pinned to the roof of the cabin when the airbag went off. Laughing

Thanks Darras, great info, I'll have a look around Fleabay. Thumbs Up

Did early D5’s not have the same v6 twin turbo as the D4 until the I6 became available? I didn’t know there was a third engine option available.

Besides the exploding 2.0L diesel Ingenium, pre 2018 3.0L diesel D5's came fitted with the TD(V)6 engine...it is the same engine as the 3.0L twin turbo SDV6 fitted to the D4 but single turbo. It had an improved crankshaft (and other bits) but still basically the same modified Ford Lion V6 diesel fitted to Jaguars and Land Rovers at the time.

The 2017 D5's TD6 & 2018-2020 SDV6 are also the same engine, single turbo 256Hp 600Nm torque on TD6, Twin turbo 306Hp 700Nm torque on SDV6. The single turbo TD6 power and torque are the same as the Twin turbo SDV6 fitted to the Disco 4. Power to weight ratio are different though, the D5's monocoque design with no ladder chassis is about half a ton lighter than a D4.

It's quite easy to spot when you open the bonnet. The single turbo TD6 has an airbox on the right with a single outlet hose (as you look from the front), the SDV6 has a pair of airboxes, one on each side of the engine bay.

The twin turbo SDV6 on the D4 had a single airbox on the left but 2 outlet hoses side by side, one for each turbo, each with a separate MAF sensor.
