    Number plates

What number plates do you use recommend I’m thinking of aesthetics I’ve bought a standard size and fitted it but it looks a bit lost? I know you can get square and oversized plates. I’m also going to fit a black plastic surround similar to those supplied by powerful uk bling bling Laughing

I'm with Gerry all the way on this, insisted my dealer fit the correct sized slim plate and it looks so much better: https://www.carthrottle.com/news/lr-design...s-odd-rear

I stuck with the standard sized plates although I fitted a black number plate trim panel to keep with the 'black pack' look I started off by painting the tow bar trim panel with chip resistant satin black engine paint and adding the black exhaust trim thingys.

Original, after I fitted the number plate trim but before painting the towbar trim panel and adding the exhaust trims (and black mirror caps)....back end filled out with odd looking bits of grey soul-less plastic which just had to be remedied. Neutral

I’ve just had my number plate trim delivered along with black lettering. Was it easy to paint the silver plastic trim? Did you remove it and spray it ? Or use a brush? Are you pleased with it I’d be afraid of bodging it 😬

I took the tow bar trim plate off. It's only secured by 4 plastic screw tabs underneath and a few plastic fasteners along the top edge. You just undo the fasteners underneath and pull it off. I put the trim plate in the big vice in the workshop, a quick prep with wet and dry, undercoated it with grey primer and spray painted it with the airbrush on the compressor.

I bought the satin black engine paint when I was rebuilding my Harley engine so I had a fair bit left in the tin, it looks pretty on the engine after the edges of the fins are polished up with a bit of wet and dry. Wink

The engine paint, besides being satin black and matching perfectly with the rest of the plastics on the back of the Disco, is also heat and chip resistant...and quick drying...so no peeling or scratches to worry about.

Sadly I don’t have a workshop only a shed which has the usual crap in it 😂 neither do I have a compressor and spray gun I might look into having it wrapped along with the front one

Wrapping is definitely worth a look...but you can buy rattle cans of VHT satin black engine paint at Halfrauds or most motor factors...those are perfectly useable too. I only have the compressor painting gear as I used to occasionally doodle artwork on motorbike tanks as a hobby once upon a time.

If I didn't have the airbrushing stuff, I'd opt for a rattle can of VHT paint over wrapping, mainly due to cost and less faffing about. It doesn't require you to be Leonardo DaVinci either, spray painting large bits of plastic with rattle cans is as easy as it sounds...if you get a bit too overzealous and have a run or 2, wipe the runs off with a rag soaked in isopropyl alcohol or paint cleaner and just respray over the small area to blend it in. There's no lacquer coating or anything like doing bodywork panels... Easy as pie.

The process is the same, a quick prep with wet and dry and a bit of brake cleaning fluid or similar...undercoat with grey primer, also from a rattle can, then spray 2 or 3 coats of the satin black evenly and lightly. The rattle can stuff is also quick drying, usually fully dry within an hour at room temp.

If there's any slight variation in shade or colour between the existing plastics (they do fade over time) and the freshly painted trim panels, a quick wipe of 'Back to Black' plastic bumper restoration fluid with a rag over all the plastic areas to blend it all in...also from Halfrauds...and it's a done deal.

I also took the front bash plate off and sprayed that as well...just to get rid of the last bit of grey plastic. The satin black matches in nicely with the black plastic on the front bumper too. Thumbs Up

The front bash plate is a bit more complicated to get off since there are 4 securing bolts underneath to remove instead of the large plastic screw fasteners (or at least mine did)...besides that, it's not difficult and fairly obvious what bolts to undo once you have a look underneath.

I forgot to mention, the 4 large screw fasteners under the tow bar trim plate only need 1/4 turn with a 2p coin to undo... the top edge fasteners are just standard pop in panel fastener things. A sharp tug on the trim plate once the bottom fasteners are undone and it comes off.

Simon and co at PowerfulUK did a handy vid on fitting back end plastic bits...
