    D5 competition with ground clearance in mind?

    Shopping for a new SUV to replace my Rubicon I selected the D5 to pre-order due to the criteria I required - ground clearance and a decent on road ride. Rubicon of course has ground clearance but it lacks on on road performance.

    So, looking at the usual competition X5, Q7 and XC90, they just don't have the ground clearance the D5 does even when fitted with optional air suspension if offered.

    Mercedes GLS does have better ground clearance then the D5 but it comes at a steep price and fuel mpg is lacking. I also think the interior needs an updating.

    I just recently looked at the Porsche Cayenne. It has equal ground clearance to the D5 when fitted with air suspension. On road manners are very good, I drove a Cayenne S last week. Back seat is very comfortable too as a bonus.

    Opinions?

    Cayenne 268mm in high level 2 (diesel)

    D5 283mm

    Wading depth isn't as good on cayenne even with air suspension. Neither are approach/departure angles.

    The Merc still ain't as good.

    Me personally, if you want to hit the rough stuff it has to be the Disco.

    I have a D5 and I also purchased a Porsche Macan with air suspension a month or so later. I'm not planning on heavy off road so can't advise there but what I will say is that the build quality and the dealer with the Porsche is a million times better than Land Rover.
    When I'm not in the operating theatre, I'm mountain biking, spending time with my family, running and socialising. I have a Discovery 5 HSE Lux with pretty much every option ticked. This is my first ever Land Rover. Been a rocky road with regards to reliability but we're getting there.

    It begs the question as to why you bought the D5 over one of the uber reliable German brands Rolling Eyes given LRs track record. My aunt swears by Volkswagen but they've been in the dealers more times than all my LRs put together, not to mention its emissions scandal recall. There's good and bad dealers with all manufacturers. Thumbs Up

    I'm on my 9th and wouldn't go past them, if you want a vehicle that will do everything then Disco it has to be. The XC90, X5, GLS and Cayenne don't have low range surely another factor if hitting the rough stuff.

    I can only speak from experience. As I said before, I wanted the D5 to take to ski resorts as I'm sure it will be more capable than any of the German brands. However, it has been unreliable and the dealer has been rubbish. Buying my first Porsche at the same time I think it's helpful to compare my experience.

    I know many on here have green blood and will forgive the product of any problems but I don't expect to pay £75k and be on first name terms with the local AA recovery agent.

    Low Range option on both Cayenne and GLS although I do think the GLS is dated.

    I would agree, the Disco all the time. Thumbs Up

    Sits head and shoulders above the rest of the brands, when running correctly, its unstoppable !!!

    The rest of the car brands jumping on the 4 x 4 bandwagon are just car manufacturers who are better of sticking to cars in my opinion.

    Alot of the so called 4x4s are just cars on stilts, plus they dont have the pedigree or expertise that LR have.

    Just my tuppence worth but others may disagree.

    I understand there is slightly less ground clearance in the Cayenne compared to D5. It isn't nearly as great a difference as the others (X5/Q7/XC90).

    It is arguable that the Cayenne has better reliability then the D5.

    Sadly, we cannot get diesel Cayenne in the States, BUT there is a bi-turbo V8 that makes HUGE power. I'm talking 380kW (510hp) and 750Nm (550 ft lb tq). Brand new that one is way more expensive then the D5, get one a couple years old and the price is equal.

    A 510hp car that can do very well off-road too would be the best of both worlds to me.

    Am having boot issues also, wont close from the button on the boot itself, only from the button at the front . Sad

    Far better off with a RRS SVR - 5 litre / 542 bhp Thumbs Up

    It is a hard decision for sure. I need to test drive the diesel D5 once we get one at my local dealer to make my final decision.
