Key Hacking and car theft - How secure is the D5

I noticed to today that some poor soul on the FFRR forum had their range rover stolen from their drive, most likely through some sort of key hacking or transponder range extender to make the car believe the key was much closer and allow the door to be opened and the car started and driven away.
After a few minutes the thieves disabled the tracker as well.

So, my question is - how secure is the new D5, can the key be hacked or the range of the fob transponder be extended to fool the car into believing the key is close by?

One of the reasons I use keyless entry & not the fob.

cant the keyless entry be "hacked" with range extenders to fool the car on the proximity of the fob - have seen some examples on line of range rovers etc being fooled, just not sure i the D5 is more secure against such attacks. Its an easy way to steal a car Sad

will look for way to disable keyless entry Smile

    Ah, interesting
I was under the impression that keyless is more secure than using the fob, because the signal can be copied easier? but I'm no expert.

    Considering all above

Would it be more secure using the Landrover App to lock the car ?

I suspect that the range of the key fob can be "extended" to allow the keyless entry to work if the key fob is out of range of the car. However, the key fob does need to be pretty close to a point where the chappie with the criminal intent can get his receiver. In other words, don't leave keys close to a door or on a window cill where they can be seen. What is not clear to me is how this continues to work once the car has been opened, started and knicked, unless LR's own security regarding re-keying vehicles is being hacked. Only LR dealers have the software, in theory, activated to re-key - anyone can get hold of the diagnostic software, but that facility is not available to third-party users.

If you are concerned, disable the keyless function. That, though, won't stop the cloning of the signal from the key fob when you press the button. But that is a different issue, and really only allows someone to open the car, not start it, as the key fob is still required to actually start the engine.

Long and short, it is not that straightforward.

No, I have a feeling it will not be too long before it happens. Big Cry

Just imagine if a hacker gets into the central system controlling this, who knows you may see hundreds of LR's unlocking all at once! Rolling with laughter
