Whining/Vibration noise when car cold
Hi,
My disco has recently developed some sort of Whining/Vibration noise when cold, you can hear it here:
https://soundcloud.com/tokyostreetview/whi...co/s-ogfik
I had the dealer listen to that sound, could not repeat when the car was hot, and they told me that there is nothing wrong and nothing they can do as this is "normal". Now, Being my 3rd Land Rover (4.6HSE, Disco4 and now Disco5) I am a bit paranoid and these small noises always become a problem over time.
Oh and the sound also matches accelerations and regular drive but will go away after 20 - 30 minutes.
So my question here is
1. Have anyone had the same problem?
2. And if so, what is going on?
Regards,

Hi, Is this the 2.0Lt Ingenium Engine?
There has been an issue with many of them requiring 'Balance Shafts' replacement due to bearing wear which LR are fully aware of and replacing on Warranty.
It's an engine out major job. 2-3 days.
I know well - mine has just been done on 2018 D5 at 16000mls. Engine is now very quite!

Hi CJB and thanks.
It is the 3l engine and the car only have 4500 miles. I checked quickly and it seems that this problem is only for 2l engine... was the sound the same and only when cold?

Hi,
Yes problem of balance shafts is only 2.0lt LR engine.
The noise was not really when cold only.
Your noise problem with 3.0lt must be something else unfortunately.

Hi CJB,
So, get back the car from the dealer, they could not reproduce the sound yet they changed the Idler pulley and guess what? The car is now silent, at least for the past two days I got the car back...
We will see but hopefully, this was just as simple as that.

I've got the same sound. Do you know which pulley they changed? Maybe you've got the part number?

Sorry Gruber, I do not have any details on this as it only states "idler pulley". However today I found out that the sound is still there, WAY less intrusive than before and this since they changed the idler pulley, but still pretty much there, so I will have to bother my dealer again with that...
If by any change you sort this out please let me know! I will update you as well if I have something new.
Cheers!

Thanks GonzagueGB. I'm afraid it can be a supercharger. I will let you know...

It could also be the AC compressor. This car interior gets so hot that this winter I had to use the AC to cool it dow all winter long
I will check this later too, let me know what you find!

Hi,
Sorry for the delay. So YES and NO. According to LR/Jaguar here, while they acknowledge the sound they label it under normal operation and there is nothing to worry about. I know this sucks, especially when you are driving a new car and with past experience with LR, but for them this is OK.
Here is a recent version of this sound... for LR, this is "OK"

I had the same noise. Idler pulley and belt replaced. It seems the noise has just come back over the past couple of days.
I'll be taking the car back for another fix. IMO it's not 'okay'. The car never made the noise when I bought it, so they can fix it.

Well, they won't unless people start to complain and they issue a recall. Now my car is no longer under warranty and they claim that is "normal operation".
You can always send a mail to
tbollore@jaguarlandrover.com like I did with the video, never had a reply, but hey, he wants to change JLR Image so let's put some pressure.
