If you only do short trips (where you aren't on motorways or runs up to temp), then Petrol will be better for you, but don't expect the petrol engines to be economical. A 4-banger in a car weighing 2.5tonnes will never give more than 20mpg avg, no matter how delicate you are.
My dealer has this new & unregistered Carpathian HSE Lux Si4 in stock if you're interested. He's offering heavy discounts due to it being MY20. Let me know if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with him.
If I wasn't doing really long motorway journeys which gets the engine up to temp, there is no way on earth I'd be buying a diesel JLR product. Petrol all the way, the problem is they get hit residually because everybody wants a Diesel Disco and/or they can't live with the dreadful MPG (you really have to work the 4 banger petrol really hard which means it's always 'on' turbo using fuel.
I had a SDV6 RRS, and that suffered from Oil Dilution issues over a mix of motorway and very short journeys. I've come back to JLR a few years later because my journeys are now 99%long motorway and I'm hoping the brand new D300 has crank/dilution issues resolved. But even now a small part of me wonders if I should have gone for the new P360 and suffered the tax/mpg. Time will tell.
Hang onto your present car. In this climate, who wants to buy a new car? I know mine makes a nice driveway ornament if you’re into that sort of thing. I am certainly not doing the mileage to justify it, particularly now.
I’d put the money into something else personally, land, holiday home, you’ll probably get more enjoyment and it will appreciate over time rather than diminish.
