    3G end of life

    Hi there, what will happen, when 3G reaches its end of life? On MY17 Disco5s you have a 3G modem which is used for remote access and which loads trafic data during the trips and so on. Is there a possibility to upgrade the module to 4G/5G or will all these features become obsolete and useless over time?

    I don't even use mine. If I want the truck connected to the internet, I turn on its wifi and connect it to my phone's hotspot.

    You can still use 2G phones, so I guess 3G will also continue to work?

    not in the US for much longer - 2G and 3G are sunsetting to make room in the spectrum for 5G+.

    AT&T, which is the US carrier for LR connectivity, sunsets 3G in February 2022.

    Just found this:- Here in the UK, 3G will actually be switched off before 2G. The reason for this is that the current 2G infrastructure supports the pager network in hospitals.

    Appears to be by 2023 in the UK, which will mean the 2017 D5 will then lose all the live functionality to its NAV system. That will presumably impact the values of these cars even further.

    I think I may well sell mine in 2022 regardless, not a clue what it will be replaced with however....

    I've not tried it but I believe if you connect the Disco to your mobile phone hotspot the satnav etc will update accordingly. May even be quicker than using the sim card reader.

    So future of 3G may not devalue the car as much as you fear.

    Check also the date when 2G is stopped because a 3G device can connect to 3G as well and often 2G is being kept going longer

    I do this all the time and get 5G LTE connectivity for things like SOTA while on the road.

    I'll add that most people now use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which is through the phone and not the vehicle's built in mobile connection, so hardly anyone will notice if the vehicle's 3G connection stops working.

    I use the Satellite view on the maps almost exclusively, and it is a complete pain the butt to activate hotspot on the phone, type in the password to connect it etc etc, hence never hotspot off the phone.

    I've only had to do it once...then the car remembers, and I have never had to do it again.

    Not all providers quit 3G it seems :

    I just had a reply from JLR. It seems that D5 with a production date before 2018 are 3G.

    If you want to know 4sure, watch your infotainment display, top right hand. If there a

    symbol comes up, its 3G/4G... If its 3G you are in some kind of a problem..

    For the build-in SIM card [secure], it will switch to 2G like the emergency services.

    Also remote / in control will work through 2G, which gives a slight delay..

    The " WiFi" and the " Traffic info " through your own SIM card in the slot in the centre

    console, will drop to 2G also, early 2022. So make sure your provider does offer 2G.

    Alternatively you can route it through your mobile phone too.. ..as mentioned in a previous

    post above.. Sad

    Thank you for all your responses. I asked Land Rover CRC Belgium-Luxembourg to give me some more information on this and on eventual upgrade possibilities to 4G/5G and they told me that 3G/4G and even 5G connectivity is defined by my Sim card... and for further technical questions I should ask my dealer...

    I know that it is 3G/2G-edge only (MY17) . If the customer service does not know this, who should? We, the people in the forums that actually care about their cars and try to make sense out of pieces of information in manuals, technical guides, discussions and other sources?

    I found the information in the online manual.

    They explain the symbols that can be found on the infotainment screen...

    So I looked under "connectivity" :

    2017 = https://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/docume...c/G1821983

    2018 = https://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/docume...c/G1821983

    2020=https://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/document/3D/2020/T29581/36236_en_GBR/proc/G2134441

    I know my way through the service channels since I also own an F-Type... Mr. Green
