    Would you buy a 2018/2019 D5?

    I'm just wondering whether existing owners, knowing what they know now and having had whatever ownership experience they have had, would buy an approved used D5 now?

    I currently own an X5 x40d that's been with us for many years. Now we have a new addition to the family, with all of the associated baggage, the X5 is feeling a bit low on space so something larger is required.

    I've always liked the look of the larger Land Rover/Range Rover vehicles and the D5 seems like a natural choice. We have been considering the full size RR Vogue but having looked at them both side by side, the D5 seems like a more practical option, particularly given the 7 seats. I have been looking at approved 2018/2019 HSE's in the 45-50k price range. Considering the various engine options, I think the SDV6 seems like the best choice.

    Digging in to my due diligence I've found an alarming number of references to serious and widespread issues like complete engine failures and leaky windscreens (due to faulty bonding) with the potential subsequent damage to electrical systems. The engine failures are particularly alarming, especially given how common it seems to be and how reluctant (and slow) LR are to accept responsibility and resolve the issues. I appreciate that there may be an aspect of people only coming to forums to complain when they have an issue, and there are potentially 1000's of happy customers with no issues at all for each person with a serious complaint.

    I tend to keep my cars for quite a while (current car 6 1/2 years, previous car 9 years) so having to maintain a manufacturers extended warranty for many years to come is not an attractive prospect, especially when they are going to try to wriggle out of covering legitimate and well know manufacturing/design faults.

    So, knowing what you know, based on the experience you've had - would you pick up a 3/4 year old used D5 in 2022?

    Would I buy one? Yes, I did.
    The SD6 from MY2019 (68 reg) is a nice upgrade to the older TD6.
    Remember that what you read on forums and social media is biased towards people having problems. I certainly haven't posted a message about every time I used my car without any problem.
    Whilst I don't have any statistics, I seem to see very few (if any posts) about engine failures of the SD6. A few about the older TD6 and quite a lot about the V6 Disco 3&4s.
    Leaky windscreens also seem to be mainly the older D5s.

    I sold my SD6 D5 6 months ago when my new D300 arrived. I'd quite happily have kept it if the deal hadn't been so good on the new one.

    I absolutely would - but I'd do my homework on it first. View the service records and avoid cars with incomplete or nonexistent service records.

    from what I've read, I would avoid the Sd4 engine and go with Td6 or SD6. The Td6 here in the US has been quite reliable, but we did not get the SD6 / SdV6 (300hp turbodiesel) so go with the locals on that one. Seems those have been fine from reading this forum. My 2017 HSE Td6 has been fantastic. The Si6 here in the US was also quite good - my local dealer tech says they rarely see the 6-cyl supercharged petrols in for anything other than scheduled service, but I love my Td6.

    The leaky windscreen issue should have been resolved - that was a QA escape from the factory on original install - if there was going to be a leak, it would have happened in the first year or so, and if it was fixed properly it would never happen again. Mine was replaced under warranty by a qualified window tech (Safelite Auto Glass here in the US) contracted by the dealer service center and it never leaked again.

    I've only had two minor issues on mine - a failed keyless entry module which was fixed in a few hours by the dealer, and a failed DPF soot sensor which in my experience are wear items on all diesel vehicles.

    Probably more than anything - research the dealer you'll use to service it. That seems to me to be the #1 thing that will influence many people to stay or leave the brand.

    I agree with DieselRanger and JonM, Full history is essential and check if any recalls have been carried out.
    The only potential stumbling block is your reluctance to continue with awarranty due to the cost. Because the D5 uses JLR's own sofware, you are limited to where you can take it, main dealer or specialist. its going to be expensive either way IF something goes wrong. The D5 has LOTS of electronic gizmo's anyone of which could fail without warning, its not a car for the DIY'er except for basic service items, there doesn't appear to be any 3rd party diagnostic/programming tools being developed, even GAP seem to have given up. I think PICO can be used but I dont know to what extent. I love my V6 and can't think of any other marque that comes close, but I will continue with a warranty until I choose to sell.

    I have a very early 2017 model tdv6 and I can honestly say that I love it.

    So far, been almost no issues at all.

    As has been said... I would stay away from the 2l diesel, and make sure that all servicing has on time and by a reputable garage.

    I will say, however, that the LR dealers are CRAP (excuse my French!!). They are ONLY interested in what will come out of your wallet... They are NOT interested in repairs being done properly and offering good service.

    nbec, you say all JLR dealers are crap, I guess I must be lucky with mine, They are extremely knowledgable, capable, accomodating, trustworthy and helpful. When any of my cars went in for work or servicing etc I was given a courtesy car, I am communicated with prior to, during and after the event. any concerns I have are accomodated and I am made to feel wanted.Maybe its because it is a 'family' dealership and not a multi site multi marque retailer, and I didn't even buy my D5 from them!!!

    I've had my 3 litre SE since May 2017 so one of the early adopters. In that time I've only had the rear seating platform motor fail. I escaped a lot of early issues with the entertainment system due to mine having the tried and tested one that was fitted in the disco sport. These all seems to be ironed out. All the earlier cars also went through DPD issues which again appears to have been sorted by software upgrades. Up to now I've had no issues with my windscreen although I'm sure I have read where 2017/18 owner's have just recently had leaks The only thing to watch out for is the discs, they seem to wear at the same rate as the brake pads. Mine done 35k and at the last service they were saying new discs were required. I have fitted new rear pads earlier but escaped having to replace the disc this time but others weren't so lucky. All in all love the car and have another on order. Not had any trouble with servicing at my local dealers because I've not had any real issues with the car.

    Big thumbs up for the full (dealer) service history and checking out your dealer. I have two dealers of the same franchise near me. I dislike one intensely and the other is great. Not just the name- it’s the people.

    I am one of those whose TDV6 engine had a crank failure outside of LR warranty. My dealer was great and I had 100% of new engine cost covered by JLR because of the full dealer service history. Apart from that, I had a keyless entry module and a throttle body fail in my four years of ownership.

    I still think the D5 is a great car. Immensely capable and spacious. I never quite understood why it wasn’t a bigger seller. Models have all been updated now, but for a long while when sat inside you wouldn’t really know if it was a D5 a RRS or a FFRR. Personally I like the exterior styling but I think the media slating of he rear end probably impacted sales as much as anything. I think it is one of the best value JLR products if that is not an oxymoron…

    One other thing to think about is if you can- go for a 2019+ model with adaptive dynamics. Makes a big difference to handling and body roll. It wasn’t available in the D5 on the earlier models.

    I don't want to speak too soon, by my MY 2019 3.0litre diesel ownership experience has been a good one. Lovely car, lovely to drive and super engine.

    The dealer is pretty good too, provided you plan ahead where you can.

    I would be far less confident about a car with the smaller diesel engine though - my brother-in-law bought a very low mileage 2018MY second hand, from a main dealer, about 3 years ago and his ownership experience has been horrendous. It's almost been off the road as much as it has been on it, and not in the muddy tracks sense. When it needed a new engine under warranty he was given a refurb'd engine by LR, and it failed again within weeks. I feel for him... he saw mine and knew how much I liked it, and that led him to take the plunge.

    He will never have another LR ever! And he means that too.

    Thanks for the advice and sharing your experiences. It sounds like it's not universally bad, and the later models with the SDv6 may be somewhat more solid than earlier examples.

    This does still leave me with plenty to think about. It seems used prices are staying high at the moment and will do for a while with the new car supply issues. Finding a MY19 SDv6 model with the specification I want for £50k or less (Or even ~£55k) doesn't look like it'll happen. Not as an approved JLR supplied vehicle anyway and as people have said, given the known issues, buying privately or from an independent would be too risky.

    I am quite surprised by the poor spec on a lot of the approved used models up for sale at the moment. Unless the included options aren't being listed properly by dealers, or the MY19 HSE spec includes features as standard which I'm presuming are options - there are a lot of poorly spec'd D5s out there right now! For example I'm not sure how or why anyone would buy such a large car without 360' parking cameras. That's pretty basic and something that should be standard on even a base model given the type of car and price - my old 2012 X5 has 360' cameras and even my wife's three year old QashQai has them as standard.

    Any tips on where I can find spec sheets for the different MY's and how I might visually identify a MY19 vs MY18? I understand that the registration is not a good indicator as some 68 plate cars will be MY19 while there cold be 68 and 19 plates on MY18 cars too due to the difference between manufacturing date vs. registration date.

    Thanks again for the feedback so far, it's been good to hear different experiences. I've been watching some YouTube videos from a channel 'The Doctors Garage' and he paints a pretty gloomy picture of discovery ownership.

    The SD6 engine arrived with MY19 deliveries started September 2018 with the 68 plate. The badge on the back will say SD6 instead of TD6 and under the bonnet, the SD6 has two air filters (one each side of the engine) whereas the older TD6 only has one air filter.

    Also looking inside the car, the steering wheel switch packs are physical buttons on my18. They changed to illuminated touch sensitive buttons on my19 with SDV6 engines.

    360 cameras were optional until the current (my22+) generation afaik.

    Thanks, useful. So all SDV6's are MY19? I'm sure I've seen 18 plate SDV6's advertised, perhaps they are misdescribed?

    Odd on the 360 camera thing. There's no way I'd own a large car without that, can't believe anyone would!
