No steering assist in 2025?!?
I'm considering a second D5 for my wife before they stop making them, or all we're able to get from the next generation is electric which we don't want. So, I've been looking at new Disco 5's via the online builder and it seems there are far fewer options available than I have on my MY20.
I can live without the rear entertainment - although with a three and one year old it's been incredibly useful to have control from the front, something that simply handing them tablets doesn't achieve. I don't like the fact most controls have been moved to the touchscreen rather than having physical controls/buttons (like ride height adjustment etc) - they did much better on the defender keeping those as physical buttons/switches. There doesn't seem to be an option for UV/Solar protection on the windscreen but that's minor.
The big thing for me is that there's no option for proper steering assist. This is the feature that actively steers for you while on cruise - keeping you in the middle of the lane. Not lane keep assist which simply warns when you start to drift out of lane and nudges you back, but fully active self steering. We often take 14h+ journeys to southern France in one hit (D5 is awesome at this with only one stop for fuel). Having steering assist helps make this possible - it really reduces driver fatigue on long trips.
Is this really not available or have I missed something? I can't believe that in 2025 when autonomous features are more and more common that an apparently high-end premium brand like Land Rover has taken a backwards step and removed this option.

It was removed a long time ago. There was concern about liability if someone relied on it and crashed. I even heard rumours about it being disabled by software updates for vehicles that had it previously.
I think it was still an option when I ordered my MY19 (I didn't bother with it) but it was cancelled soon afterwards. It certainly wasn't an option when I ordered my MY22.

Irritating, I find it very useful. It’s not perfect but then it’s not full autonomous driving it’s an assist that requires you to stay in control. I can’t see why they wouldn’t be able to work out liability, other car companies have. God look at how many stupid people Tesla autopilot has killed and you can still get it. Pretty sure BMW still offer automatic steering on the X5/7.
Not sure I can swallow spending almost £90k on a car that doesn’t have this. Perhaps I’ll have to consider looking for a second MY20 although it’ll be challenging finding one that meets my requirements in terms of spec, and condition.

It is absolutely astonishing. The one thing I was disappointed by when I purchased my new Discovery. My old 2019 car had the full driver assist pack, which included the full steering assist and parking. The new one has the feeble lane keep assist.
Even the family runaround Volkswagen Polo, much older and a fraction of the price of the Disco has full steering assist!
Really don't know what Land Rover are thinking here, especially as the technology was available years ago, and now seems to be restricted to the Range Rover models. I think it's more about maintaining some exclusive features for RR rather than liability, but who knows, and pretty misguided in my view.

Since the Pivi generation arrived, Steering Assist, like Park Assist was deemed a Range Rover only feature set. This is for model differentiation, nothing to do with liability. For instance, those features are also unavailable on Defenders.
Early cars were able to have that feature activated by third parties, but something changed in the software from MY23 onwards, which stopped that.... A cynic may suggest a correlation with the launch of the new Range Rover.

It's a little offensive that their product team decided Discovery owners don't deserve the opportunity to add (and pay for) that option if they want it. It's clearly not about price point as the Velar seems to have this option too and those come in cheaper than a Discovery or Defender.
A real shame, I love my Discovery and am seriously considering a second for the household - but I won't be buying a new one without this option. It would be a significant backwards step in terms of capability. I don't personally want a Range Rover. The full fat is nice but too expensive, the velar doesn't tick enough boxes and I personally don't like the image that the RRS gives off.
With regards to Pre-MY23. Are you saying post facelift models before MY23 can potentially have steering assist enabled? That's an interesting solution, I think I have a better chance of finding a clean low mileage MY22 than a second MY20. Do you know where I could find more information on this? Any indy specialists you'd recommend speaking with about it?

Certainly agree with that sentiment.

Not forgetting the Evoque and Jaguar's such as the F-Pace, which had the options.

Talk to LR-Chip in Kent.

The site lists Park Assist Gen 2 activation, but no mention of Steering Assist. They would know whether they are one and the same thing, in terms of the software activation.

Nice find, these guys are 5 mins from me, I'll drop them a line.
I think it's the same group of people I've spoken to about the dreaded crankshaft failures, just under a different 'brand'. They were really helpful. The techs were knowledgable and suggested if I do an intermittent oil change every 6 months/6000 miles and use genuine LR oil filters, it's very unlikely the engine will fail - most they have seen show clear signs of neglect, cheap leaky oil filters and skipped services (even if the customer thought it had been serviced). Wasn't aware they did this sort of thing too.
