No grinding noise, down button moves the window to halfway down.

Up button closes window, but not quite close, doesn't look square and stops about 1/2" shy of fully closed.

Can I re-calibrate the window without a gap tool?

Yup...lower the window as far as it'll go (D5 rear windows only lower half way for some reason), release the button and then hold it down for 3 secs. Raise the window fully and do the same release and then hold up for 3 secs with the button.

If it doesn't close properly, it's the cable sticking...probably due to being rusty and starting to fray.

Thanks Mole, I'll calibrate, if that doesn't do it I'll order the eBay set.

The nearside rear opens fully, the offside window is clearly different, only opening halfway.

Weird that...I didn't check my nearside rear window to see if it did the same. The offside one only goes just past halfway down, same as yours....even with the new regulator and being calibrated.
