How to fit roof bars or cross bars

My D5 has factory fit roof rails and I want to fit original roof bars (VPLRR0154) but cannot figure out what the various levers are for. I have watched youtube, searched on this site and others and whilst there are some videos showing bits of the process none seems to cover the levers or how to remove the bars without brute force. The clamping mechanism seems to be slightly sprung so stays wide when positioned over the rail. The pin is then located into the rail and the bolt is tightened using the allen key just like countless other bars for other cars. So what is the purpose of the black handle and the red plastic locking device? It doesn't seem to do anything! When removing the bars presumably just undoing the bolt should be enough, Does the clamping mechanism spring open or does it require a lot of force? I am normally pretty mechanically minded but this has me stumped!

You're not the only one...having precariously balanced on a box and fitted a set myself I had to search around the internet for some virtual assistance in working out what all the knobs, screws and levers actually did.

I found this vid from a kinda straight up Aussie guy helped me suss it out in the end.

    Hope it helps Thumbs Up

To remove the bars...unscewing the torx bolt on the end under the cap fully will let you remove them with no effort. You have to drop the red lever to get access to the bolt...it's the one you use to tighten them onto the roof rails. The bars won't come off until the torx screw is loosened Wink
