That's not how a PHEV works
Not once have I been in a situation were the PHEV has no charge left and anyhow JLR uses a 300hp 2.0 lump which is available anyhow
Have you ever driven off-road for 50-60 miles in low gears at low speed in your PHEV? What would happen if you drove your PHEV at 10mph for 4 or 5 hours?
There are many configurations possible. IMO the best way would be to implement a diesel-electric traction setup, where the diesel turns a generator, which powers an electric drivetrain for motivation, similar to a locomotive. Then you get diesel range and instant electric torque till you run out of fuel. Batteries are there to regulate power through the drivetrain and for surge to get the vehicle moving off the line.
But the weight penalty from batteries and armoring them for off-road travel is still the biggest drawback. As battery tech improves, this will be less of a concern.
