If you have to remove the battery to charge it, then I wonder why LR give instructions on how to fit a connector to plug in a battery charger so it doesn't need to be removed?
But on another note if you trickle charge what is the diffrence between that and the alternator charging the battery when driving along

Will soon be fitting a split-charge and aux battery. It must be straightforward as there’s no post of D5’s going bang from those that have already got a dual battery install... So really do wonder why the manual seems to make it so complicated...

I think LR may be trying to avoid issues with people charging the battery using both +ve and -ve terminals instead of just the +ve and an earth point on the vehicle. By installing that charge point they make sure the earth is on the vehicle. IIRC even in the battery charger manual it states to take the battery out of the vehicle when using both terminals on the battery for charging.
Connect the charger to the battery ́s positive pole and then to the negative pole. For batteries mount-ed inside a vehicle, connect the negative connection to the vehicle chassis remote from the fuel pipe. Then connect the charger to mains supply.
