    2.0 D5 vs 3.0D4 - Towing

    Hi all,

I am looking for some opinions which I haven't stumbled across yet.

    Has anyone who towed with a D4 3.0 gone to a D5 2.0?

I tow a caravan at around 1800Kg and sometimes generators etc getting around 2.5-3ton.

How does the D5 2.0 actually perform? I am yet to take a solo drive either.

Id be looking at new and the MY2019 3.0 is a lump and all this Diesel pollution talk...

    Thanks

I've towed with a 3.0 D4 and now with a 3.0 D5. Both were with a twin axle horse box and 2x 16 hand horses, so probably getting on for 3.5 tonnes. Both experiences have been brilliant, especially the new D5 which almost feels like you don't have anything behind it!

I've also tried towing the horse box with a 2.0 Discovery Sport, which we had for a short time previously, however it did struggle when it came to hill climbs and trekking across fields. Your normal, bulk standard drive on a tarmac surface was fine, but you did know you had something on tow and could feel it very much so on the wheel.

Do you mean the diesel or petrol 2L?

Thanks for the replies so far - just looking at diesels.

Guessing the petrol will be torque lacking

That was the 180 if I remember rightly.

60 horses on that helps significantly...mine pulls like a train ... far better than the D4 ever did Smile

I towed a 2.5T Emergency Catering Trailer back from Horton up in the dales, so not the best roads for towing.. Laughing with a courtesy D5 2.0D and have to say i was impressed...OK it could have done with a bit more grunt on the hills but on the whole it wasnt bad at all.

The 2L is a great engine.

It delivers power when it needs to and is quiet and pretty efficient for what is still a big lump of a car. 👍🏻

How often do you tow those heavy generators and for how long?

Will it be along easy, flat, tarmac roads, or are you going to do lots of tight manoeuvring on difficult terrain?

Probably about 6 times a year across fields for festivals etc, either generators or stages weighing 2.5-3.2 ton

Rest of the time is a caravan through the peaks or Cotswolds đź‘Ť

Try to go away around 8-10 times a year

    Cheers chaps

The first paragraph says it all Thumbs Up

I’ve driven each of the power outputs of the 2.0 litre in the DS and the V6 in the D5, but there’s no way I’d want even a powerful, but relatively revvy, 2.0 litre diesel to haul a 3.2 tonne trailer off tarmac. In emergencies, yes, but to buy for that purpose and use it several times a year? I wouldn’t.

And yet people were very happy towing 3.5t in a 2.7 V6 with 52 bhp less and 60nm less ...while weighing 600kgs more? Confused

Well, to be fair, people were happy with towing wagons full of hay and whale oil with a team of horses, until steam engines were invented.
