    Accident

Hi guys, yesterday my wife's got into the accident, side curtain airbags deployed as well as well as belt pre-tentioner. She just got a skin burn from the belt and was a little scared. I think most of the impact was directed toward the rear wheel. The car that hit her was mid size Hyundai traveling about 45km/h. How extensive could be the damage to the rear axle, frame? Still waiting for the estimator but I don't think the car will totaled. I can see that body damage is not too bad, but what about the rest?

    +2

As for the damage, years ago we had a Mazda 2 that got rear ended. By the look of it on the outside there was just a scratch on the bumper but when they took it off it was close to being a write-off, with $8,000 worth of damage.

Similarly the BMW 2 got hit a week ago, again scratches but they can't tell the damage until they take it apart.

I'd expect it to be similar in your case. Cars are designed to absorb the impact so are likely to have more damage than visible.

+1 on wife being OK!! Amazing that she didn't even get any bruising - even low speed crashes can be very violent.

I'll be the pessimist on the vehicle though. Modern vehicles are designed to sacrifice themselves so that the occupants stay safe. They are designed to absorb energy in the form of deformation of structural members. It looks like she took the hit at some angle off fore/aft but not quite broadside? If the airbags deployed, the impact exceeded the threshold the engineers determined that injury could occur. I would bet the frame could be straightened, but it's never going to be the same, and high strength steel is only designed to take a hit once - the second time it will not perform to the same level. I would ensure your adjuster approves a full inspection of the driveline and all frame members - it's a monocoque chassis, everything is connected, so the crash energy was transferred at some level throughout the vehicle. Once it's repaired, the electronic brains on the driveline expect very tight tolerances to keep torque vectored correctly, so if anything is off it could rapidly increase wear on differentials and bearings.

Ensure you have a good body shop that can do a good repair, and then sell it. I would not want to keep any modern vehicle after an accident where any airbags deployed.

Technically, it’s a unibody, rather than monocoque (there is a significant difference) and the body is made almost entirely from riveted and bonded aluminium, rather than high strength steels. Repairing these bodies requires significant investment and not every Land Rover dealer has the in house capability - they pass it over to a relatively small number of contracted specialists.

As to it being a write off, it’s impossible to say from the photo.

    long story short...

luckily it was a loss... and I had gap insurance. It took about 2 month to settle the claim and now my wife drives black D5. "New" one is MY2017, had 80km on it, HSE Td6 w/o windsor "leather" , remote seats and missing some driving aids, but with all the other options and 6 years warranty. Don't know why dealer would sell practically new car as certified pre-owned but extra warranty probably a good thing to have. May because they can't sell MY2017 in august 2018 as a new one. Another strange thing about this car, it has meridian surround but no meridian labels on the doors, very strange.

I'm glad it all worked out for you. Dealers here register demonstrators and they may not have many km's on them but as they had a previous registered owner they would be classed as pre-owned.
    Enjoy!

Thank you. No previous registrations according to the MTO report and it doesn’t look like it was a demo car - no nail scratches behind the door handles. But who knows, may no one was looking at it because wheels are not black.
