difference in ride and road noise between 19" and 21" wheels

    Hi,

I'm thinking of replacing my low profile 21" wheels/tyres with 19" to reduce the risk of damage when driving over bumpy ground (potholes etc springs to mind).

I was wondering if the ride on the 19" tyres will be not as harsh as the on the 21", and possibly whether the road noise might be less too.

Will be Pirelli Verde on 19" as are on the existing 21" wheels.

    Any thoughts ?

You might struggle to find some 19" wheels that fit. Apparently D4 19" wheels rub on the brakes so you'd need D5 19" wheels which seem to be a rare option and I've not seen any 2nd hand ones for sale.

The ride will improve due to the larger tyre sidewall between the you and the road.
FYI, the sidewall height of the 21" is 124mm and the 19" is 153mm, so you'll have 29mm more sidewall.
Downsides to consider; more flex in sidewall might be felt during cornering and aesthetically they don't look as good. Personal preference of course!
The tyre on the 19" will be narrower so your road noise point may well be true, but it'll also benefit fuel economy as less frontal area and less drag.
You'll have to check the 19" fit over your brakes though I suspect they do.

I had 20’s on my D5,took it everywhere in exmoor, Dartmoor and other car unfriendly places. No issues at all even when rock crawling for extended periods.
    Stock 22’s were terrible.

Bonus : 20’s are easy to source and cheap, I used new Range Rover ones painted gloss black.

Edit : side wall on 255/55/20 was 140mm if I recall.

So, you Brits calculate with inch and mm all together Wink

Wouldn’t opt neither for the 19, but go for the 20 inch, best of both worlds and easier to find!

I had thought of going for the 20" wheels, but had felt (rightly or wrongly) that there'd be less risk of popping a tyre if I went for the 19".

I was thinking that the extra inch might safeguard the rims from being kerbed too.

19's are the best for ride and they are the quietest for road noise of all the sizes offered, also higher sidewall means less likelyhood of kerbing. 21's are the worst for road noise.

Coffecup I'm actually going the opposite to you. The D5 HSE I've ordered strangely has 19" fitted but I have just purchased a set of 20" . I do actually have a set of 22" but have been told they will be loud and the ride will suffer.

They're going to be a bit small on a D5. 255/55 is the standard size for 20" wheels. On 19" wheels you'd want 60 profile to get the correct overall diameter

harrythespider, where are you getting car from, 19's are std on S &SE, HSE comes with 20's as std, wasnt aware you could down spec an hse at build to 19's.

yes, you are correct with the specs, apparently it is an ex management car, started at HSE but with extras to take it beyond Luxury ( except rear screens) and 19's put on for ride quality.

    Went from 19 to 22

No significant ride difference - Handlng better if you’ve got your jiggy on

Did same swap on a ffrr with the same result

But on a D4 ride compromised as you go up the rim sizes IMHO and pesonal experiance
