    Dab Tv

Anyone know how easy it is too fit an external DAB TV tuner too the D5 ?
I have taken the tv tuner out from my D4, but after a little research it looks like it wont be a simple plug n play as my D4 had a different Screen as opossed too the D5s Infotainnment set up, so am pretty sure the rear connections will be different unless i can source a specific adaptor. I dont want too be ripping up the interior dash, so i thought maybe a standalone unit can be used which i had fitted to my car, which worked a treat. Answers on a post card please Thumbs Up

Hi Russell, its connected with a wiring harness into the back of the head unit.

I have a similar setup on my Subaru. I bought a new double din head unit with inbuilt Dab TV ,Dab radio, Satnav ,dvd.

Its fitted via the standard ISO Male to Female radio connections, plug and play - Cost me Ā£10 from Halfords as i did not want too butcher the original wires, plus i could easily fit it into another vehicle later on.

Mind you i think i will have problems fitting it into the D5 as am sure all the rear connections will already be used or different ones too ISO as LR want you too buy their own products, not add aftermarket components Shocked

I was hoping someone had it up on youtube. Idiots guide.
Mind you am not too keen on damaging a new dashboard, plus all the squeeks and possibility off popping the air bag module, knowing my luck. I did the fitting on my car all by myself, but i dont think my wife will let me touch it as its hers, hence would have made life alot easier if was factory fitted. Sad

I was quoted Ā£1k for an aftermarket fitting, from a car hifi specialist, the day I picked the car up.

We were misinformed that the FE came with a TV tuner, when I ordered the car. (Seemed a bit daft having a dvd player with RSE but no TV tuner, for the top of the range model).

Anyhow never went down that route thankfully, as car was rejected.

In the Lux, we ticked the box for the Digital TV and dual view front screen, Ā£1,500 odd.

If going aftermarket, I highly doubt you will get the dual view function, which enables the front passenger to view the TV screen, whilst car is in motion.

However it may be possible for the front passenger and driver to view the TV, when car is parked and handbrake is on. Not sure how they would connect the ground lead to an electronic handbrake though?

Was alot easier to do on mine which has a manual handbrake. Just a case of attaching the wire onto the metal surface of the handbrake via a grub screw.

(You can ground the wire directly onto the stereos metal chassis, basically bypassing the handbrake, which would enable the passenger or driver to watch the Tv or a dvd in motion, but I would not recommend, as its illegal, and I doubt the retailer would do that either).

With the LR one, when parked up the driver can also view the TV screen, dvd etc, which is a bonus as I originally assumed that due to the dual view, the driver can only view the map.

Dual view function can be switched off and on.

On the rear of the LR unit, there are no audio or video inputs as such, for an external TV tuner box, i.e yellow, red or white phono sockets.

My guess is that the TV tuner is built into the actual head unit, and its then activated via the CCF, once you pay for it, or the tuner box is attached separately behind the dash, and wired into the headunit via the wiring loom.

It maybe possible to run a Digital TV tuner box through the HDMI connection, it so can be viewed on the screen. Be a fraction of the cost, compared to the LR one.

Alot of aftermarket ones have internal ariels now, which is better in my opinion, rather than an external ariel which requires a hole to be drilled in the roof.

I was running an internal ariel in my car on the rear window and worked fine when still, but on the move there was interference. Ended up connecting the second ariel behind the rear view mirror, and the reception was excellent. Signal had doubled. (My whole setup including the headunit was Ā£250) .

You can purchase an HDMI to 3 phono adaptor to make things easier.

Setup below won't even cost Ā£50 Thumbs Up

No problem, interesting to see the results Thumbs Up

Pity as I would have put up a few photos of my setup, along with ariel locations, etc, but I recently took everything out and replaced it with the factory unit, as just sold the car at end of last month.

    Is this an alternative?

I agree with everyone it would be good to get TV into the car. The kids are bored with the DVDs apparently Rolling Eyes

Stintov, yes DVB2 is the updated version from DVB, hence its double the price.

I suppose its like DAB and DAB +, which is the better format.

I must have had the DBV version in my car, as I had no access to any HD channels. The TV tuner box was already built into the head unit.

DVB2 is supposed to be more resilient to interference, and has double the signal strength apparently.

DVB2 is also the standard used for Freeview HD, I believe.

So I assume the D5 is DVB2 as we can pick up several HD channels.

I have the same ariel, as in your photos, but ended up purchasing the thinner ariel (from my photos), separately for the front windscreen as looked alot neater.

Just tried to spec a new car over the weekend, and can't find the option for Digital TV. Even on the new FFRR, I could not find the option. I assumed it was due to the chip shortage.

I rang the garage to ask them, and they stated that they are not offering the option on any of the vehicle range. Apparently its to do with being deemed a distraction.

Can anyone confirm this thanks, or is it actually due to the chip shortage?
