It's safe to say from our forum laboratory tests it's between 2300-400kg

There are quite a few of the guys on here tow horse boxes which laden come up to 3500kg without any problems behind their D4's. The same with diggers and the like, these weights are way above the D4 weight yet stability has never been questioned before. I don't see why the D5 towing over it's own weight should be a problem either. There is a recommended limit for inexperienced towing of 85% by the Caravan Club but who came up with that is anyone's guess. They go on to say that experienced towing can go up to 100% of kerbweight. I have towed all kinds of weight in my time but rarely have towed over 100% due to the choice of car compared to the caravan. If the car is rated to 3500kg and I'm towing 2500kg, I'm well within the legal limit imposed which if stopped is the Gross Train Weight. Some think that there are different rules abroad, there aren't. GTW is the spec the authorities will check if you're stopped. They will also check if the van is overweight so be careful on this as it invalidates your insurance.
Point being that LR consider the act of towing something which weighs a tonne more than the D5 as within spec, I would want to take it steady as it's when it all goes wrong that the extra tonne will make itself known. I would feel quite happy towing my 2500kg van behind my 2341kg or less D5.

My new caravan along with the D5 has been dropped off with the Caravan dealer today, they're going to do some tests to make sure it's all stable and set up correctly before we head off later for a test weekend. Also asked if they could take some photo's of the set up for their promotional stuff. I agreed as it's bound to involve a free wash!
Will let you know how we get on
When I'm not in the operating theatre, I'm mountain biking, spending time with my family, running and socialising. I have a Discovery 5 HSE Lux with pretty much every option ticked. This is my first ever Land Rover. Been a rocky road with regards to reliability but we're getting there.

The one thing I have noticed is that with the deployable is that the only way that you can make the trailer level is too use the cars suspension, as the trailer sits at an angle ie it's pitching upwards, whereas with the fixed, height adjustable you can lower or raise the ball hence making the trailer/caravan level which again will be influential too its handling characteristics.
That's one of the things that I will be checking next week as the towball height can have a big influence on the caravans handling. Pdes & Russell - do you guys have the electrically deployable or removable towbar ? If so, does your caravan sit level ?
