Yet to get my car but this is of course a worry, do new Disco's have a protector that's suitable for this or a third party option really is the way to go? If so what's recommended?

Yes, the new car will have a protector plate but it is no where near as secure as Ray's plate. I actually have the RLC plate on underneath the LR plate for a double layer of protection (although the LR plate probably doesn't add much above the RLD plate alone).

I’m the same, RLC plate with the LR plate inside it. The RLC plate appears far more secure than the factory one.

Dont think you get any think LR has ant thing been making these for D3/4 /5 since they came out yes they work ether me RLD or 4X4 Overlander
