    New to me D5?

I'm a long time D3 and D4 owner, and it's now time to move on. Looking at what I want from a vehicle, I have decided to go to a D5 with a V6 diesel, I can't think of an alternative that I would like.

What would you recommend I look out for when looking at second hand D5s? With the funds I have I'm looking at MY2018 or MY2019.

    Don't buy a 2 litre one!

From MY19 (68 plate), you get the SD6 engine which is an improvement over the TD6. Also, from MY19, adaptive dynamics was an (extra cost) option. It wasn't well described, so most probably don't have it but if you can find one, it's well worth having to improve the road handling. It became standard from MY21.

If you can stretch to a D300, MY21 onwards, then you'll get a mild hybrid with significantly better fuel economy and more power, plus a straight 6 engine with no nagging concern about the crank.

Check what tow bar options are on it, it's not like the D4, if you want to change what's already there, it's a whole new rear cross member.

Nope, the D300 I have now is staying for a while. It has all the options I want and doesn't have the compulsory speed limiter forced on the new ones but EU regulations.

Has the old D4 started to give you trouble or are you just ready for more refinement?

It's starting to cost more than I'm willing to spend on it. I did think long and hard whether to keep it (it still runs well and passed the last MOT with no advisories), but at about 180,000 miles I think it's time to say goodbye. If I could do the work myself, I'd probably keep it, but health (broken leg last year limits mobility) and space to work are issues for me.
On Saturday I sat and trawled through Autotrader to see if there was another vehicle which would do what I want and be what I want. The only thing I could possibly replace it with is a RR Sport,

Nice. I wouldn't chose petrol but if you're doing short trips or low mileage then it's probably a good choice.

With the newer ones, check that it has a low range transfer box (this one does) but it wasn't standard on all of them (particularly the diesels).

Yep, I found that out the other day trawling through Autotrader. There seem to be a lot of high range only about.

Petrol - not really a problem for me, only do about 10k a year and the rest in electric cars.

“An Elephant on steroids”. Unfortunately, when you put it to the test the mpg is scary.

Mine struggles to get over 30mpg on long runs and sits in the high teens around town.

Like you, we don’t do a lot of mileage each year so it’s not significant.

I’m coming from a sub 30 mpg D4 so I’m not too worried. If I drive like Miss Daisy on a long run I can just about squeeze 32 out of it.

And lose an opportunity to annoy the wife? She sees speed limits as more of a starting point.

Will I also get rid of the turbo lag? Won’t miss that at all.

So far so good. The only annoyance is the 2 foot larger turning circle.
