Hi everyone, I am currently looking for a set of new tyres for my D5 and wondered if anyone with 22" alloys had fitted 285 45 22s. If so were there any problems or rubbing
I can get the standard 285 40 22 size but would prefer to go up a bit in sidewall size if they fit with no issues
What did you discover? I'd also like a bit more sidewall, the alternative I've considered is downgrading the alloys to 20".
I wonder, if you did install larger tyres how do you reconfigure the speedo etc? My Ottofix D1 has a service function 'change wheel size' but on this car it says 'not supported'.
Ended up getting 285 45 22 yokohama geolander a/ts. Tyre place couldn't get a set of 4 grabbers anytime soon so opted for the yokohamas. £70 per tyre cheaper too 😎

SJT - what size tyres do you have on your 20" Defender rims and do you know the specs/size of the rim as in the width and offset - or are they all standard? My current tyres are going to need replacing this summer so will be my best chance of trying this out.
How would you say they transform the ride? handling still ok, not too boat like? I'm really looking for a bit more forgiveness with potholes and rough roads. Our sons school is down a series of heavily abused country lanes and that's not much fun on 22's with lowish profile tyres, often have to ride the muddy banks to pass people too.
If you do get a minute to look at what size and type of tyre you're running on them it would be appreciated but no hurry.
Interesting, those are a size up from the standard disco tyres - similar to the 285/45/22 mentioned at the start of this thread or 275/55/20. I’ve done quite a bit of research on wheel/tyre sizes, offsets etc. I’m now running 20’s. I’ll make a post about it when I get a bit of time.
I picked up a set of 5x 19" Defender wheels - almost new, with almost new continental tyres on ebay for £250. I think someone had taken them off a Defender pretty much straight out of the showroom to put on larger alloys. At that price (cost of one decent AT tyre) I figured it was worth a try.
Our daily school run is down some very rough lanes and this has transformed it, can also climb curbs etc without giving it a second thought.
I have some Discovery 20"s that I brought and had planned to recondition and put 275/55/R20 AT rubber on. Then these came up so I thought it was a good chance to try out the larger rolling radius before investing £1000 in those (Defenders have a larger wheel/tyre combo). So far so good.
In terms of AT tyres, I read Falken Wildpeak AT3W or AT4W are one of the best if it's for mostly on road use - but I haven't tried them yet. It's between that and the Grabber AT3 purely as most others have quite a low speed rating.
My new D350 came with 22" wheels. I actually liked the handling, but almost immediately took them off and put them safely in storage. The old, slightly scuffed 20" wheels that I've used for the past 7 years went back on with another new set of 255/55R20 GGAT3s.
The on road handling is just as good, the lack of road noise is the same and I have 3PMSF winter capability and off-road grip.
I'll probably put the 22"s back on if I plan any summertime long road trips.

Yes I’m the same. I put the 22’s back on for July/August when we tend to take long road trips on lovely smooth European roads. I found the 20’s and then 19’s feel progressively more ‘boat’ like in terms of stability and handling, but you quickly get used to it. The benefits on rough roads and even around town for hopping up kerbs far outweighs any loss of ‘feel’. My wife says she prefers the ride on the 19’s.
