    Clearsight Mirror

    Hi,

Currently have a Defender that has a clearsight mirror, which is very good, especially with large dogs in the boot! Had to have a loan car whilst Defender serviced and the Discovery Sport has a clearsight mirror.

We are thinking of possibly switching to a Discovery 5 in 2023 due to needing more boot space, but it appears the clearsight mirror is not available as an option on the Discovery 5, This seems a bit strange, can you kind people here confirm that is the case of we are being given the wrong info? Many thanks

Correct - not available. Our evoque has one and we prefer to use the normal mirror anyway. We don't miss it on the D5.

Many thanks for the reply, I do find it very useful with dogs in a cage in the boot space and would very much like to continue using similar if we change cars.

A shame the Discovery 5 does not have it as an option, hopefully this will change in the future.

We did not specify it on the Defender it came with it, I was not fussed initially but having used it I far prefer it over a normal rear view mirror.

The guys from https://www.lr-chip.co.uk will help you. it can be retrofitted. But consider the cost - it is not a cheap thing.

A bit of necro thread revival here...but I've been raking around recently for a DIY Clearview mirror upgrade/retrograde kit...no luck so far. If anyone finds one from some enterprising Chinese dudes on Ebay or anything, post a link up Thumbs Up

I know lrchip offers the Clearview mirror as a retrograde on the D5...but at £1500 plus having to drive the Bling Barge down to Kent for the fitting, it's not too realistic an option...certainly not for me.

It's not a hard thing to install technically speaking...fiddly, certainly but no harder than fitting a rear dashcam... and it'll need a CCF update/rewrite to power the Clearview up but the IID tool should manage that. Still no idea why LR didn't make it an option on the D5...very strange Neutral

There's a few scrap RR Velar and Defender Clearview sets including the fin camera mount and wiring on Ebay...but I'm reluctant to try a conversion since the mirror mounts are different. I'd rather wait for a proper D5 retrograde kit and just do the fitting.

A couple of things to be aware of before you embark on the project.....

On our Evoque, the clearsight mirror uses a high camera (possibly in the shark fin or spoiler), not the reversing camera. The reversing camera on the D5 gets a lot of road spray and dirt on it and is too low to see over bikes or a trailer on the towbar. You can also keep it on the screen on the Pivi Pro systems if you want to.

The other thing is that if you use reading glasses or varifocals, a conventional mirror will work well because you're looking at something in the distance but with a clear sight mirror you need to focus on the screen which is high up where your glasses are designed for distant vision not close focus.

Thanks Jon, the Evoque or Velar (even perhaps the Defender) roof fin with the camera also fits on the D5 using the same mountings as the existing shark fin antenna so that partially solves one issue in attempting a DIY conversion...it's just the physical mirror mount, running a cable from the camera to the mirror along the roof lining and editing the CCF to power the mirror and enable the centre screen view option (if that's even possible on pre-Pivi Pro screens) that's the issue for the moment.

The centre screen option should technically be possible...since the 360° cameras all go through it as it is. It's just adding the extra camera option by editing the CCF file via the IID tool. The OEM mirror on the D5 also already has a power connection going to it as far as I know, (I'd have to pull mine off to look) probably using the same connector as the vehicles with a Clearview mirror...JLR tend to use the same internal electrical bits on a variety of their 'same family' of products. The only addition would be the actual camera cable from the shark fin camera to plug into the mirror.

It's certainly possible since companies like lrchip offer the Clearview as a retrograde option on D5's of all ages...so the parts to do a DIY conversion will be readily available off the shelf from somewhere...perhaps a phone discussion with lrchip explaining the difficulties in my geographic location and asking them to sell me the kit for a DIY fitting? I won't know unless I ask...but I'm guessing, in the unlikely event they'd agree to that as an option, it wouldn't be particularly wallet friendly either.

The only reason I was even thinking of the Clearview as an option was due to the modular boot rack I'm fitting in the Bling Barge...it has a high level shelf on it that will negate any rear view from the mirror... about the same as having a couple of rather large rugby players permanently sat in the 3rd row seats Rolling Eyes

Realistically, I don't use the rearview mirror that much in the first place bar a casual glance now and then (too used to driving HGV's and tractors using the side mirrors)...but I'd still like the clearview as an option if I can indeed manage a DIY conversion using currently available scrap or second hand parts from a Velar, Vogue or Defender.

It's only a possible future workbench project for the moment...it won't be the end of the world if it ends up being more bother than it's worth...since even with just the 2nd row headrests up, the rear view out of the back window from the mirror on the D5 was never that great in the first place Wink
