Thanks Jon, the Evoque or Velar (even perhaps the Defender) roof fin with the camera already fits on the D5 using the same mountings as the existing shark fin antenna so that partially solves one issue in attempting a DIY conversion...it's just the physical mirror mount, running a cable from the camera to the mirror along the roof lining and editing the CCF file to correctly power the mirror and enable the centre screen view option that may be an issue on any DIY mod attempt.
The centre screen option
should technically be possible...since the 360° cameras all go through it as it is. It's just adding the extra camera option by editing the CCF file via the IID tool. The OEM mirror on the D5 already has a power connection going to it as far as I know, (I'd have to pull mine off to look) probably using the same connector as the vehicles with a Clearview mirror...JLR tend to use the same internal electrical bits on a variety of their 'same family' of products. The only addition would be the physical cable from the shark fin camera to plug into the mirror.
It's certainly possible since companies like lrchip offer the Clearview as a retrograde option on D5's of all ages...so the component parts to do a DIY conversion will be readily available off the shelf from somewhere...perhaps a phone discussion with lrchip explaining the difficulties in my geographic location and asking them to sell me the kit for a DIY fitting? I won't know unless I ask...but I'm guessing, in the unlikely event they'd agree to that as an option, it wouldn't be particularly wallet friendly either.
The only reason I was even thinking of a Clearview conversion mod was due to the modular boot rack I'm fitting in the Bling Barge...it has a high level shelf on it that will negate any rear view from the mirror... about the same as having a couple of rather large rugby players permanently sat in the 3rd row seats
Realistically, I don't use the rearview mirror that much in the first place bar a casual glance now and then (too many years driving HGV's, tractors, vans and old style commercial Defenders using just the side mirrors)...but I'd still like to explore the clearview option as a mod (or even using the Evoque style shark fin camera as a tidier option than the common rubber sucker style rear window camera as a rear dashcam) if I can indeed manage a DIY conversion using currently available second hand donor parts from a Velar, Evoque or Defender.
It's only the inkling of a future mod project for the moment...it won't be the end of the world if it ends up being more bother than it's worth...since even with just the 2nd row headrests up, the rear view out of the back window from the mirror on the D5 was never that great in the first place
