Fog light /Towing
Hi
I have just joined the D5 site having been on the Disco3 forum for the last 18 years. I tow a caravan and when I connect the electrics everything works as should but to get my rear fog lights to work on the caravan I need both front and rear fog lights on the Discovery? On my previous D3 I just turned on the car rear fog and the caravan ones came on. Any thoughts?

To be honest...although the D5 does the lights test from the centre screen...I've never tried running a horsebox or the like with the fog lights on...
It's made me curious though...I'll check that out next time I hook a trailer up

Rear fogs should work without the front fogs on even with a caravan or trailer connected.
Does your caravan have the 7 or 13 pin plug?
Is there towbar the original LR one or an aftermarket one?

Original LR towbar and 13 pin electrics on the Discovery. Caravan has 13 pin electrics. My Disco fogs work as they should, but only when I connect the caravan the fog lights on the caravan only come on with both front and rear turned on

Do the rear fog lights on the car come on when the caravan is attached?
They shouldn't. If they do then it may be that the car isn't programmed correctly to work with the towbar and the CCF may need editing with and IID tool or similar.
MY2026 D5 Metropolitan D350 - on order......

Not sure ( because I never checked) It will be the weekend now before I can check with the caravan connected. It was my wife who was at the back of the caravan telling me (shouting) that lights were on or off

I understand your thoughts on the CCF being programmed wrong. But thinking about it, if you need to have fog lights on then front and rear should really be used ( fog doesn't just stay at the back end)

I see what Jon means though. If the rear fogs are switched on, it 'should'...if common sense prevails... bypass the ones on the car and switch the caravan ones on... having the car's rear fogs reflecting off the caravan would be annoying.
Don't know if the rear fog towing operation etc are different between D5 versions either...might have been a firmware update between Pre and post facelift versions for instance...
Not a thing I've tested, even though I drag a few trailers etc about now and then.

I agree

I have towed a lot but never had to put my fog lights on, Only when testing do you realise they work correctly or not

I set off from a campsite with caravan attached early on a misty morning last year and put just my ’rear’ fog lights on.
The car’s rear fog lights didn’t come on but the caravan rear fog lights did.
The rear indicator light on the dashboard was on.
I didn’t have the front fog lights on at the start as I didn’t think it needed them as it was just mist.
But I recall switching them on shortly after starting off, when I saw a car coming towards me out of the mist with his on.
The front indicator light came up on the dashboard.
So on this occasion mine worked independently.

Just checked my very early D5…. Rear fogs work perfectly in my 3.5 tonne horse trailer. Rear fogs in the car stay off!!
Tried then turning front fogs on… they work independently of rears.
