    Auto fold mirrors / Towing

    Hi
Is it possible to lock my D5 without having the auto fold mirrors activating? When I fit my towing mirrors they catch on the body work Big Cry so bloody annoying

I’ve had the same issue causing a dent in my door Censored

On the 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5, the ability to permanently disable the automatic folding mirrors upon locking is generally not available through the standard in-car settings menu.
The feature is usually controlled by the vehicle's Car Configuration File (CCF), which means you typically have two main options:
    1. Ask a Land Rover Dealership or Specialist: They have the necessary diagnostic equipment (like SDD or Topix) to access and re-write the CCF to disable the auto-fold feature permanently. This is the most reliable method.
    2. Use an Aftermarket Diagnostic Tool: Tools like the GAP IID Tool (or similar advanced diagnostic tools) allow a private owner to access and modify the CCF settings themselves. This requires purchasing the tool and having some technical confidence.
A Potential Temporary Solution (Worth Checking)
While a permanent switch-off usually requires a CCF change, some Land Rover models have a way to temporarily override the automatic folding:
    • Try manually folding the mirrors OUT first: Before you lock the car, use the mirror control buttons (usually located on the driver's door) to manually fold the mirrors out.
    • Mechanism: The control for folding/unfolding is often a pair of buttons that you press simultaneously.
    • Theory: On some models, if you have manually positioned the mirrors, the vehicle's system will respect that manual input and not auto-fold them when you lock the doors.
If the manual override doesn't work, then a modification to the CCF is the likely answer.

See this thread, as quoted there, I use Milenco Aero fitted to the top of the mirror which folds without any issues.

This one was fitted loosely just to get the photo.

Because the mirrors are curved I didn't think these would work

Yes work a treat, more so the newer design with curved feet for the pads.

No idea what type Milenco mirrors I have,
but I use these, the extra ridge sits in between the mirror case & the cowling.
Because the cowling is tapered, you can only use 1 pad each side.

I also glued a small bit of an old bike inner tube to the bottom half of the clamp, just to add a bit of none slip to it. I’m sure the newer clamps have a rubber none slip base these days.

I have had the same strap on Shocked towing mirrors for the last 22 years. Not that iam tight, but they just work for me apart from this Discovery

As mentioned, you can only get away with using 2 of these pads, 1 on each side, so don’t know why they sell them in a 4 pack.

I used them and found an issue!

The mirror edge plastic trim varies in width around the mirror. This means that ideally the retaining rubber ridge on these would need to be different spacing…other wise the mirror is clamped hanging off the thin edge.

I went back to the platinum Milenco clamps and push them fully over the trim to get full contact.

The Grand Aeros Platinums are by far the best (most stable) Milenco mirrors I’ve ever tried.

Sure..not cheap, but neither is a Discovery and the trailer you are towing.

The clamp for the platinums (which fit all their other mirrors anyway) is curved and flexes with pressure…which I find much better than the flat solid ones.

    Hi
Just done a 250 mile caravan journey without any towing mirrors. This was the first time towing with the D5 and it was OK.
