Actually enjoying the challenge. (I refuse to be beaten Cool

It’s a very small seep which makes it difficult to locate but I am making progress.

Ironically I am switching between a car leak and an equally evasive leak in my cousins central heating.

The only difference is one is gaining water the other is losing it. 😂

Talking about water...the ferries were a bit sporty today since the sea was a tad lumpy. Anyway, we had plenty of time after a trawl around Tesco and Lidl so we went for a spin from Kirkwall to St Margaret's Hope on south Ronaldsay down the side of Scapa Flow.

It was nice letting the Bling Barge stretch it's legs a bit on normal carriageway roads, even for the relatively short jaunt to south Ronaldsay and back to Kirkwall for the afternoon ferry home...The weather was a bit wild but we enjoyed crossing the Churchill barriers whilst being lashed by the sea around the east side of Scapa flow and seeing the old blockships sunk there in 1940 to block the eastern channels after Günther Prien steered his U-boat (U-47) into the Royal Navy fleet anchorage at Scapa in October 1939 and sank the battleship HMS Royal Oak at anchor just a month after the declaration of war...

The Imperial German high seas fleet was also scuttled there by the crews during a rebellion in 1919 after being forcibly detained there after the end of WW1...Scapa flow is one of the premier wreck diving sites in Europe Wink

Anyhoo, enough of the local history before anyone thinks I work for the Orkney tourist board...we had a nice day out Mr. Green

Now here’s the thing….I may be totally wrong here but (using a farming analogy) I think I am fixing leaking gates when the water is getting in over the fences and forming puddles anyway.

I did not cut my roof off!

But an image off the internet leads me to believe (if I am correct) that these leaks cannot be cured without removing the windscreen.

For water to get off the outer roof (red arrow) and into the interior head liner it has to get passed the black seal strip. (Photo)

The seal strip bond integrity with either the glass or the bodywork has to be broken SOMEWHERE along the length of the seal…. allowing water through, to find the lowest point of exit, whether that be due to vehicle motion or the angle of parking.

Of course it begs the question how and why water is getting off the roof into the area ABOVE that seal in the first instance ……and if it does where does it go to get out if the seal isn’t compromised?? So there may be 2 issues of ingress!

If I am wrong with all this conjecture, please put me straight, as I am left with considering how to get my windscreen most economically replaced and the seals checked out/fixed ….not being under warranty anymore!

From what I take from your posts on this...it seems to me that the issue is indeed with the seal but in line with that strangely fitted section around the end of the roof channel on one side. From that, it might still be possible to stop the leak by sealing that small section rather than resorting to removing and refitting the entire screen and seal.

Replacing or refitting the windscreen alone won't do it since I suspect that the leak is between bodywork and seal rather than screen and applied sealant. Whether or not specialist screen fitters or JLR doing it under duress once the core issue is pointed out to them, I've no idea...but screen fitters don't normally remove the entire seal and replace it...they usually just replace the screen with reapplied sealant between the glass and the existing seal...

Yes I realise it would take someone more than a windscreen company to investigate the seal. They actually DID the glass side thoroughly 2 years ago and I do believe that isn’t the weak link this time.

May have a chat with my indie when it’s in for service…see what if anything they would tackle.

I wonder if a car restoration company may be better positioned to tackle this….or maybe even THEY sub windscreen work to Autoglass et al.?

A little more discussion and less knee jerk experimentation now, methinks.

For the time being I have solved it Rolling with laughter
