    Pre paid. £28 in Argos.

You won’t use more than this in 2 years. I was using it past the date w/o problem.

Now got a non Land Rover vehicle with a built in SIM and a good monthly allowance for life curtesy of the manufacturer.

    I’ll never go back. 👍

What are these for? I assumed they just use data for the maps, but my phone does that? Unless its for the annoying news thing i cant remove Very Happy but im looking at getting an Ottocast so i can have Youtube / Netflix etc.

Can't use a 4G/5G sim card in the Bling Barge...being a 2017 model, the telemetry module is 3G only...which is now discontinued. WiFi works fine though and I can use my phone as a hotspot if I need an internet connection in the car. The onboard nav maps still work but with no live updates or traffic info...which makes it kinda redundant.

To be fair, I've never once used the onboard software for navigation or music etc, etc...besides all the pointless trial and error trying to make it work.

My phone via an Ottocast dongle for wireless Android Auto works just fine...

The perplexing thing is that my 2017 car itself, still communicates with iRemote app from my phone with 4/5g. Seems like the on board system isn’t limited to 3G, just the optional SIM card slot ?

Could well be that since I've got 4G/5G icon on the main screen when my phone's connected as well... and the LR remote app works fine.

I've never once got a sim card to work, I've tried a couple of data sims. Since it's just for connectivity for the onboard maps etc, it's never particularly bothered me. Like I said, my phone + the wifi connection does everything it covers in any case.

The only thing I don't have by not using the onboard nav is the directional icons appearing on my HUD...but to be fair, I don't feel I'm missing anything special.

Mole… my 2017 model gets the traffic details via WiFi.
In Luxembourg we still have 2G&3G (till the end of the) but I managed to kill my SIM card reader.
I have now installed a WiFi router and a 4G dongle so the car connects to the WiFi automatically.
I have seen that if I don’t have that router turned on I don’t get the traffic updates, but when it is on I DO get them.

This would imply that the traffic updates can be received via WiFi and not just via the 3G sim.

I would have thought a 4g MIFI unit (combines the wifi and dongle in one unit) could be a better way to go.

Of course it still needs a data sim subscription.

I’ve been with EE for years as it’s the best coverage in rural areas but recently they hiked their prices and wouldn’t negotiate. So I switched to SPUSU ( Austrian outfit) that….use EE network in UK and I halved my monthly phone account.

Spusu don’t do data sims in uk but they have a rolling monthly contract and at their prices you could just add another phone sim and ignore the calls and txt part of the plan.

At the end of the day, you have to ask how much you need this feature…even at these low prices?

That TPlink mifi dongle looks the part...trouble is, I've no space left in the car to shove any more dongles. Laughing

Straying off topic, I was looking for a cheap EE contract SIM for my old Galaxy S23 I gave to Mrs Mole when I bought my current S25 ultra 5G last year...she's had a total aversion to having a mobile phone thus far and point blank refused to have one under any circumstances. She shoved the S23 in the kitchen drawer where it's been ever since... She's not tech shy or anything since she uses a laptop and iPad...it's just phones she's taken a dislike to.

Anyway, I bought one of these cheap Spusu rolling SIM plans to stick in the old S23 after your mention so I'll keep waving it in front of her...or hide it in her handbag or something... Rolling Eyes

Even more off topic...I've been with o2 since they were BT Cellnet back in the early days of mobile phones and I'm quite happy with the SIM only business contract I've had for years so I'm not looking to change. It's only a few quid per month and the 4G coverage is decent up here as mobile networks go...Come to think of it...I've changed my phones often enough but I've had the same mobile phone number since the turn of the century... Shocked

Saying that, my full fibre broadband is with EE (which is now part of BT) and our digital house phones connected to it come with unlimited free calls to mobiles as well as UK landlines as part of the package, I can see mrs Mole's standpoint at not needing a mobile phone given the amount of PC's, laptops, tablets and other tech we have in the house. When we're out, we're normally never further than a few feet apart so she just uses my phone if the need arises...

The reason I didn’t want a device like that is that it has a power button that you have to press to turn it on.

The one I have used turns automatically when the power is on.
