    New D5 HSE Lux

    Evening

Been a member on D3/D4 for years and now upgraded to a D5 so thought I would put something up here.

Just traded my D4 for a 6 month old D5 HSE Lux from Pentland. It has a few extras which are good and some which I wouldn't have personally chosen but hay ho.
The change from a D4 is night and day. There are things I will miss however its a much nicer place to spend time.
I can actually see some sense in the rear boor flap as well Rolling with laughter

    Picture below on collection day.

    Looks ace 👍🏻

One thing I do miss is the feeling of sure footedness. The D5’s suspension to me feels softer and more prone to leaning than the D4 did. Maybe I’m too used to the Disco sports much firmer and lower ride and need a realignment of my trust in having such a heavy high riding car again ?

    Thanks folks.

It's Coris. Same as my last D4. I really wanted to go back to a lighter silver as I don't particularly "love" this colour but the deal was there. I find the Indus etc hide the dirt better.

Re suspension lean. I'm the opposite Rolling with laughter just now. The D4 felt like a fat lass on a bouncy castle compared to this one. You can drive so much more enthusiastically.

I was night shift last night and tonight so it's getting its wee legs stretched Thumbs Up

    Merry Xmas all.

Looking good Thumbs Up Seems your running 21's as I had these wheels with initial order. Opted for 22's instead, as the odd size wheels are for some reason commanding higher prices for new rubber, than even wheel sizes. Shocked

Anyhow, i posted over 6 months ago with regards too the ride on the D5. My car was late and we had a DS and a D5, both as courtesy cars. The DS was alot firmer than the D5. However the D5 is a different beast altogether, with regards too bigger dimensions all round, plus a higher centre of gravity and kerb weight as you full well know. The D5 was like being on a boat, especially when pushed on country roads. The ride was alot softer than the DS though, and a quieter cabin. No noticeable tyre noise either. Incidentally the D5 was running on 20's. Our D4 had 19's and the ride was not as bouncy as the D5 and just as smooth. After posting up on the forum, several others replied saying their cars were fine, leaving me a bit puzzled 😕.

On picking up our car, the first thing we noticed was the firmness of the ride, even on the dual carriageway. Interior cabin noise was a bit noisier, but the drone from the tyres was quite noticeable, which resonated into the cabin. The firmer ride was quite a bit harder than the courtesy D5, but was still bearable. However, on the same stretch of country road, the car felt alot more planted and surefooted. There was far less body roll. It felt like I was driving a different car as it was like night and day. My car was running 22's, low profiles.

Well the conclusion I came too was every inch makes a difference, in this case 2 inches. Having 20's seem too absorb alot more of the shock coming from the road surface, albeit resulting in a far more wallowy softer, smoother ride. Having 2 inches of extra rubber meant the tyre sidewall could flex alot more, giving the boat like wallowy ride in my humble opinion.

The 22's however were like rubber bands in comparison. With 2 inches less of a sidewall, there is alot less flex in the tyre, hence almost eliminating any body roll. Car felt like it had super glue on the tyres. I felt the 22's were resulting in a firmer and noisier ride than 20's. The 22's gave a far better handling through the steering, plus are a bit wider than the 20's giving more grip. Felt alot stable resulting in more confident handling on the exact same stretch of road.

Basically if you want a smoother ride then it's the 20's but if you want a better handling (sportier) ride it's the 22's. I would also think the 19's would give you a softer ride and the 21's a firmer ride.

Also the few that replied saying their cars had no issues had 21's / 22's, not 19's / 20's

It's all depends what your requirements are at the end of the day. Both have advantages and disadvantages, plus the 22's have a greater chance of being kerbed due too a far shallower sidewall. Also bigger the wheel then the weaker the wheel structure is. Not too mention smaller wheels more suited for offroading. However due too the cars immense size the 19's and 20's look far too small in my opinion. Only the 21's and 22's look right and do the car justice. Seems you have too sacrifice looks over handling and comfort Rolling Eyes

I hope my theory/conclusion makes sense, but i stand corrected Laughing

    20's top v 22's bottom

The car looks smaller with 20's compared too 22's or is it just my eyes deceiving me Laughing

you are right the bottom picture is so much "better" looking.

interestingly when I was changing my second last D4 for another D4 I actively put on the 19s so the ride was better. I did think the 20's looked better but the ride was shocking to me coming from wallowy 19's it was a step too far. Daft I know.

however the 21's look ok and price wise they aren't too bad if they need replaced.

just need to get my head round SIM cards now and I will be good to go Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

(oh and find that bloomin rattle that's killing me)

Yes I totally agree. The only thing that let our D4 down was the 19 inch wheels. Again looked small for such a big car and left a big gap between the wheel arches. 20's would have looked alot better, but stuck with the 19's for comforts sake.

However this time round upgraded to the 22's as the 19's and 20's looked way too small for such a bulky machine. I also agree that the 21's look good also, which I opted for on the Hse Luxury before I managed to get a First Edition with 22's as standard. The FE worked out cheaper than the similar spec Hse Luxury, which had bigger wheels, hence opted for that instead.

At the end of the day it's a balancing act, weighing up the pros and cons. Advantages and disadvantages too both big and small rims, like cheaper tyres for smaller rims etc. Larger rims do the car justice and it handles better, albeit at the mercy of noisier tyres and a harder ride.

(I will be scouring ebay for a set of 20s for offroading and winter use with chunky treads, as I dont want to be forking out for replacing damaged 22s. Plus the low profile tyres won't cut the mustard in deep mud or when offroading).

There are posts with regards to the sim cards on the forum, which is a bit of a minefield in itself to amatuers like myself, but very helpful. I leave all the techie stuff too the kids and the Mrs. I just plead ignorance Whistle

Best of luck with the rattle/squeak. I just hope that's not why the previous owner got rid of it. LR never seem too find the elusive squeak or rattle when the car goes into the workshop, it mysteriously disappears. Always reappears when you get the car back. I think they must be deaf or wearing ear defenders Shocked

On a more serious note it's a cracking car to drive and head and shoulders about the D4, akin too the RR in my opinion. I love the colour that you have went for plus the silver wheels do it justice. I am personally not a fan of black alloys as they seem too hide the pattern of the wheel, and look awful when kerbed, but everyone has different tastes the end of the day

Keep us posted on the rattle and enjoy Thumbs Up

Just out of curiosity simonh, what rims size do you have fitted?

If my theory is correct, then am assuming 19/20 inch rims Wink

Correct. I have the stock HSE 20” wheels. And I think I agree with your summation, my DS has 20” wheels and rubber band tyres. Gripped like hell. Curbed like hell too, and far too easily.

I’ve been ‘playing’ a bit and find the grip is great once I ignore the flex and wallowing the side walls give. The ride is very very quiet when cruising whereas the 20” Continental tyres of the DS where noisy as hell on most of the UK’s shoddy roads. The D5 remains quiet.

I need to relearn trust in what LR’s chassis engineers have done Wink

Oh, and when the Scorpion Verde’s have worn down I’m fitting Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac’s. Best tyre I ever used. Lasted on my D3/4’s for around 45K miles. Yes a bit noisier but ride and grip on all road surfaces (inc off road) was amazing.
