    Brake lights

Collected HSE 2.0 today and having followed it home it appears the brake lights don't work as they are supposed to.

The fixed portion of the light cluster lights up but the section mounted on the tailgate does not.

I contacted the dealer and got this perplexing reply:

    Quote:
Thank you for your email, I understand totally what you are saying but this is the design of the new Discovery all that lights up is the long strip on the back of the car at the top of the rear window and two small lights that curve at the bottom as per your picture.

It has been designed this way as Land Rover assume most people or buy a new Discovery will be towing and therefore the small lights at the bottom will still show when you brake.

That reply seems to be at odds with the promo video:

just after 6m 30 the car breaks and the strip on the tailgate lights up.

Am I being spun a line by the dealer not wanting to admit a fault?

Yes, that second video shows how mine behaves. What on earth is the strip of lights on the tailgate for then?

The reversing lights are only the very inboard portion.

    Thanks for the videos Teemo.

It would seem that they changed the function of the rear light cluster between the promo videos and the production run. It seems very strange as the side cluster only produce a very small area of red light. It would seem far safer to have the lights function as they did in the promo video.

There's probably a difference between countries as well - US require indicators to be on (solid) at all times I think.

I'm with you on this. Looks a bit weird and is probably not as safe.

Teemo, the two video's you shown are different, the first have brake light illumination on both the lower and center piece of the brake light, the second only the lower piece. None on the tailgate section. This seems very odd, there are three different segments on the brake light at each side and different configurations. Wonder what's the thought about it is. Can it be speed dependent?

Having spoken to Land Rover assist they sent out a specialist this morning who looked at it, scratched his head a lot and went off to consult the service manual. He plugged his Panasonic tablet into the car and looked at the various modules which all reported that they were working correctly and to the latest UK spec spoftware.

He called Land Rover Technical for further assistance who said the lights on the tailgate ARE meant to light up and only when the tow bar is deployed and a load is detected are they meant to be inhibited. The car has been booked to go back to the dealer on Monday to have the tow bar logic investigated.

    Stuart,

I've just checked ours - NO brake lights on the side of the tailgate.

We don't have a tow pack so I'll be interested to know what you find out.

I'll send my Dealer the link to this thread too.

I'm pretty convinced that the way my car is programmed is the way the UK software is currently meant to work. I do not expect tomorrow's appointment to find any wiring defects or anything similar - it's a software problem.

What's not clear is why the software is programmed not to light that portion of the tailgate lights. Is this intentional or a mistake?

Various explanations from dealers revolve around towing as an explanation for the tailgate portion not being used. However Jaguar/Land Rover technical say it is supposed to light.

If the towing explanation is to be believed then why does the indicator use the portion on the tailgate? If a trailer is expected to block the view of the brake light then why wouldn't it also block the view of the indicator?

I'm leaning towards the current car software having a mistake that prevents the tailgate brake light working and it'll be fixed in due course.

It does look strange having such a small brake light and would make sense if the portion in the tailgate lit up aswell. Where do the reverse lights ans fog lights come on though ?

If enough people start reporting it then should get a quicker response.

Reversing lights are the blue box.

The green box does not light under any circumstances. This is where I think the brake lights should be.

The fog lights are much further down, around knee height.
