I have tried to slot in my O2 SIM card but it won't stay down is it me or is there a knack to this? Sad

You need to use your finger/thumbnail to poke it about 1mm below the top of the slot.... you should hear a click and the card will pop back to flush with the top again but not all the way out.

Is the modem in Disco5 4G (LTE) or 3G?
Do you need to switch off the PIN code on the card before inserting it in the slot or you can do it from cars menu?

It is 3G for MY17 but you can use a 4G card. I believe the MY18 may be 4G?

I just inserted mine and set it up from the menu, I did not register it with the provider either.

If the SIM is PIN enabled you can enter it via the connectivity menu on the touch screen.

Confirm MY 2017 (across Range) is 3G, Velar and MY 2018 is/will be 4G/LTE.

Our car should be MY 2017 and LTE is, unlike the digital instruments or upgraded head-up display, the only MY 2018 feature, I really regret not to have as 3G coverage is really poor here, and being a legacy tech now, it won't be any better.

I think it would be possible to change the modem for LTE. I don't think it would be very expensive part

I would find it unfathomable that JLR didn't equip the MY 2017 vehicles with a 4G/LTE modem - they're not new or exotic or expensive, and most carriers use the same frequencies as 3G. I figured they just didn't enable LTE connectivity via software for some reason.

In the US, some mobile carriers are already planning to shut down 3G service - T-Mobile in 2019, Verizon (one of the two largest) in 2021. AT&T may hang on a little longer, but likely within the serviceable lifetime of this vehicle, 3G service will disappear to make room for 5G and autonomous driving V2V and V2I communications, which will require as much as 7 times the internet bandwidth in use today per household.

you're in the US so you would know, it's not that the hardware is expensive but that LTE bands are a mess and radios need to accommodate/license the varying, worldwide, carrier frequencies.

but I'm a bit annoyed too that my MY2017 doesn't have it either. Sad

I used a mifi device to create a wifi hotspot then connected the car to the network. Seems to allow for these extra features too. Alternatively I guess you can also open up your phone and allow the car to tether to it.

how did u join the car to the mifi? does it have a network option to join wifis?!

I tried this before I bought a SIM and the car forgets the connection nearly every time. Hopefully yours wont.
